Love the used book store at the library. My 3 year old son is obsessed with reading. We read to him at least an hour a day so I’ve been picking up used children’s books for a dollar. One of our libraries has a rack of free books too. I’m going used book thrifting today

Finished "All the Pretty Horses". That man sure can write a violent scene. Reading "Houses Without Doors" by Peter Straub. It's pretty much literary horror. I've read his Julia, If You Could See Me Now, Floating Dragon, and Ghost Story but not his shorter works. First two stories are pretty heavy. The dissociation scene as the protagonosit is relieving SA as a kid fucked me up in a big way. I still get uneasy thinking about it. I looked it up on reddit and it's one of stories that many people say has stayed with them. It's called The Juniper Tree. I'm also reading Tim Powers - Epitaph in Rust. This was his second book. It's not as dialed in as his later works, but even at 24 he could tell a pretty fun story. DNFd the Straub book 60 pages (out of 360) away from finishing it. I liked all the stories except the longest one called Mrs God. Here are the reviews: www.goodreads.com/book/show/1793943.Mrs_GodI'm thoroughly enjoying Robert Bloch "Flowers from the Moon and Other Lunacies". These are his "weird fiction" stories published in pulp magazines mostly before WWII so the language can definitely be "of its time" occasionally. About to start Dennis Lehane - Moonlight Mile.

Starting Misery by Stephen King this weekend. Need a quick King read after reading two of his doorstoppers last year

Finished ‘Get In the Van’ and while the last quarter wasn’t as entertaining as to what lead up to it, overall I liked it a lot. Onto ‘My Year of Rest and Relaxation’ by Otessa Moshfegh. I read ‘Eileen’ years ago and never got around to this one.

My Year of Rest and Relaxation is great and was the first thing I read from her. I recently finished Lapvona and thought My Year was much better, which I think is the general consensus.

My friend is coming over on Saturday, and we're doing a McCarthy exchange: My No Country for Old Men for his The Road.
Will finish Day of the Locust tonight and probably fit a poetry collection in before said exchange takes place.

Really fell out of my reading habit the back half of last year. Picked up Moshe Kasher’s new book “Subculture Vulture” for an easy read to get back into it.

This is the third book I've read by him. This one is really reminding me of Gravity's tie dye since I'm about 100 pages in and I have no fucking idea what is going on.

Damn, I completely forgot about Vollmann. That's a good idea.
The last thing I read of his was a history of the Scientific Revolution, which is a favorite subject of mine. That was fairly restrained by Vollmann's standards, but still crazy.

I just finished this and liked it a lot more than I expected to. If you’ve ever seen the clip of John Wayne throwing a child who can’t swim into a stream, that’s Hondo. It was not a pulpy cowboys and Indians story at all though. I was surprised at how poetic and beautifully descriptive some of the writing was. Would recommend for a quick and easy 150 page read.

I just read Shane in two days. Another classic western that I didn’t like as much as Hondo.

Finished The Outsiders. Great book.
Reading:
John MacDonald - The Executioners (you might know it as the Scorsese movie called Cape Fear)
Madeleine L'Engle - A Wrinkle in Time
Still reading the Bloch collection a story a day.

I loved A Wrinkle in Time when I was a kid. We read it in 5th grade and I remember my teacher demonstrating the tesseract by folding a sheet of paper

Read "Falling" by T.J. Newman in like 3 days. Was it predictable? Fuck yes. But it still kept me on my toes and it was a wild ride. If you were a pilot, would you crash your plane into DC to save your family or would kill your family to save the hundreds of people on your plane?

It's a little too early to tell but at 1/4 it's pretty close. The Bloch book is Flowers from the Moon and other lunacies. He had A LOT of short story collections.
