finished Soviestistan this morning, then found out I only had two days to finish Say Nothing so I wen't ahead and powered through the last few chapters, meaning someone else got to start it on st paddy's day.
Now idk what to read next. Maybe finish the poppy war or my brilliant friend series. Maybe reread Gravity's tie dye or 2666. Or maybe none of those things.
I don't fuckin know man

Sixty pages in I was telling my wife that this could be one of the best books I have ever read, primarily because of the themes and insights and effect of the text to reflect myself, or at least seeming to do so which is artful in itself. At one hundred pages that aspect has lessened somewhat but it's still shaping up to be an excellent read. My original (joke) estimate turned out to be accurate. Finished this one earlier today. Even as far as one third into the book I wanted to believe it was one of the best books I had ever read, but by the end the push and pull of the pointlessly mundane against the pointlessly weird feels like it collapses in on itself. You probably have to be a specific type of person to immediately love this, or read it multiple times to get a handle on all the threads so that some sort of coherent structure emerges that is worth thinking about. At this point I'm not sure I could recommend reading it. --- Next on my list is 'Frontier' by Can Xue. You nailed it with Solenoid. I'm sure I could benefit from a reread now that I know what all is going on. I just don't want to.

Started ‘Little Girls in Pretty Boxes’ a while ago, a book about the brutality of women’s figure skating and gymnastics. Gonna try to finish it this week.

George R.R. Martin - Fevre Dream
A possible spicy take but IYKYK - GRRMs best books are not ASoFaI and it's not even close.
Emily St John Mendel - Sea of Tranquility. 50 pages in one go without even noticing has got to be a good sign.

Raced through Kent Haruf's Our Souls at Night, which was a lovely, gentle story and now I'm equally racing through Morvern Callar by Alan Warner. Lesgeddit, books rule.

Bound For Gold: A Peter Fallon Novel of the California Gold Rush by William Martin
Its OK. The gold rush part is a little long winded, kinda wish they did more with the modern day story but whatever. Im about halfway through it i think. The chapters are fucking loooong.

Emily St John Mendel - Sea of Tranquility. 50 pages in one go without even noticing has got to be a good sign. Dying of the Light rocks and would make for a sick movie adaptation. Really want to read more of his sci Fi, but it's pretty hard to find.

I'm surprised he hasn't OKd new editions.

Currently reading “No Beast So Fierce” by Edward Bunker and I can’t put it down. One of the best crime novels I’ve ever read. Bunker played Mr Blue in Reservoir Dogs and was a career criminal and author.

Ripped through The Stranger by Albert Camus yesterday.
Not for me. Maybe I didn’t read into the subtext enough, but the main character was just such a loser.

Bunker played Mr Blue in Reservoir Dogs and was a career criminal and author. The film based on his novel Straight Time was so good. I'd be interested to see how the book compares.

Working my way through some of the NY Times best of 2023 books. Just finished Fire Weather about the 2016 Fort McMurray wildfires. I'm about to start The Bee Sting by Paul Murray.
