Been vegetarian for 15 years but recently gone vegan. When does the bloat stop? Eurgh. Hmm. This is interesting. I'm a vegetarian, but don't eat much in the way of dairy, and I've been hella bloated and constipated lately. Wondering if this is the reason why. Sometimes when it's cold out I forget to drink enough water, which can cause this and basically make me feel like shit generally until I realize what's going on. Simple but extremely important

All of the long, stringy types I've had (spaghetti, linguine, etc) have been a real mess.
The rotini held together great though. There also seems to be a big difference between brands

Had the Carl's Beyond Burger this last weekend and it was tight but I really don't think I'll ever get it again. Glad it exists but LA has so many options I don't really need it.
Still waiting to try the Del Taco Beyond stuff tho.
Also, going to Portland for the first time this weekend. The amount of vegan stuff is insane.

My friends are getting married next week (extremely last minute) and asked me to bring a cake and a dessert for the buffet. I think I'm doing a pear cake and matcha brownies but I'm lacking cool ideas for the dessert. It should be something that'll survive a two hour car ride and can be served in one big bowl since I don't have thirty tiny glasses. I guess I could do mousse au chocolat but that's kinda boring... Any ideas?

I've been making a pretty simple, but really delicious chocolate peanut butter pie lately based off this recipe: pinchofyum.com/vegan-chocolate-pie . To make it cheaper, I use peanut butter instead of almond and also reduce the amount of chocolate (i just use those bars of baking chocolate from Rewe) by a little less than half. Then I make the crust out of bischoff lotus cookies and let it set for 12-24 hours in the fridge. I make it in a spring-form pan and it usually holds well and could be transferred to something prettier. It does tend to get a little harder to cut the longer it's not cold, but it holds together.

That looks delicious and I love the idea of a sea salt or fleur de sel topping. I'll give it a test run next week.

How does everyone cook their tofu? Looking to up my game. Here is what I do: 1. Buy Extra Firm Tofu 2. Press the water out between two small plates. (I'm too cheap to buy an actual press) 3. Cut to about a quarter inch thickness and squared. 4. Add a little oil to a cast iron pan and lay them all out. Sprinkle some spicy steak seasoning on the not cooking side. 5. When one side is done, flip over and sprinkle a little more seasoning. 6. Add to veggies and rice with some sort of hot sauce, maybe put the mixture into tortillas. Toss them in flour or corn starch for extra crisp. Toss them in anything really. Peanut butter, soy sauce, lime juice, sriracha and black pepper makes a pretty killer stir fry sauce.

I've been into marinating it lately. So, drain, press, chop into 1/2" cubes and marinate for two hours before pan frying. Simple marinade I love is just water, Braggs Liquid Aminos, apple cider vinegar, maple syrup and a little garlic powder. Will soon be working on a more Mexican flavored marinade too, but have not yet begun.

I understand and appreciate what Impossible is trying to do. And I suppose getting into a major fast-food retailer is a huge step in the right direction if moving the world away from an animal-based diet is the goal, but who is this being marketed to? I don't know a single BK fan who would order a plant-based Whopper over one made of beef regardless of how close it tasted to the "real thing". Anywhere I have seen impossible served, its significantly more expensive than an equivalent beef burger, so cost isn't a motivator. And I can't think of any reason a vegan (whether that choice is ecological, health-based, or compassionate) would want to give their money to a place like BK even if they do now offer a veggie option. Seems like a weird move.

I don't know about BK, but I've been to Red Robin with non-vegan family because it's a middle ground where everyone can find something suitable.

I regularly think about how convenient and easy it is to just grab fast food and how far removed that is from my reality.
I'd def get em from BK.

Ive been hitting up Carls Jr. for the beyond burger and now my partner orders them too. With cheese anyway, but hey its still something?
Its nice to get some vegan junk food from the drive in. Last time I had fast food I was probably 17, more than 10 years ago.

I'd say one of the biggest deterrents to people choosing a meat free lifestyle is changing how easy their life is. The less sacrifices someone has to make to follow a more ethical lifestyle the more likely they are to go with it and keep at it.

No one is making rules. It’s about individual choice. For myself, the choice to Live as a vegetarian is counterintuitive to the business model a place like BK uses to operate. Therefore I don’t go there. I can imagine many to most other vegetarians feel the same. Just wondering where the profit is in this which is the only reason BK would make the move.

Anything that makes it easier for more people to stop eating animals works for me. I feel similarly. I think - when I'm home and can buy anything that I feel comfortable supporting, I will stick to it 100%. I'm extremely diligent about what food I buy and what places I eat at when I am home. When I'm traveling to weird places and stuck with limited options, I see only positives in being able to have ANY options. Traveling 10 years ago being vegan was a literal hell hole nightmare. The occasions where I am in a strange, small town and all they have is a taco bell or a white castle, I'm going in. Also, anything that helps people who live in areas with limited options seems overwhelmingly positive. I know corporations suck and those people profiting off of vegan hype is whack, but we all know there ain't anything ethical under capitalism.

Personal go-to list: Toad Style Screamers Pizza Modern Love Fermento Jungle Cafe Wild Ginger On Mondays after 6 you can get probably the best faux fried chicken sliders ever made at Superiority Burger in the East Village. Not Brooklyn but worth going.
