Saw da first omen on 35mm last night (only theater in the country that has it at the moment or something). Def better than it has any right to be. Some predictable stuff but Iโm not mad I saw it

The middle third in Monkey Man drags a bit but the first third is great and the final third is INCREDIBLE. A super enjoyable experience overall and a great directorial debut, Dev is fucking awesome.

I thought Civil War was fine. I like the overall detached perspective of the whole thing, but Garland thinks he's saying more than what he's really saying. I do appreciate that it doesn't resort to obvious message that all the marketing seems to imply.

That looks like a Anime Dario Argento film. The GOC has good taste.

I was a bit lukewarm on The Beast for the first 45 minutes, but it really sucks you in after the first hour. Love the ending. Love Lea Seydoux.

I liked Civil War a lot. It definitely was not the movie I anticipated going into it and exceeded those expectations for me, personally. Definitely a road film, and mostly takes a neutral stance, sure, but the violence is still unapologetic as fuck. Shout out the sound design crew. Intro especially had me buzzing lol.
Performances were great, although the character archetypes ran a little hollow. I donโt think it necessarily took away from overall enjoyment of those characters.
Curious as to what thread thinks

The middle third in Monkey Man drags a bit but the first third is great and the final third is INCREDIBLE. A super enjoyable experience overall and a great directorial debut, Dev is fucking awesome. If the middle third is what I think you are referring to (training at the temple) I thought it was a nice breather from non-stop action. I think I was actually starting to get dizzy from some of the camera work haha. But yes just watched and agreed, extremely impressive for a directorial debut, very good in general

I do appreciate that it doesn't resort to obvious message that all the marketing seems to imply. I think I agree with this. I like the idea of it focusing on how we observe (or rather photojournalists observe) violence in society, but I wish he explored the themes on a deeper level. Great theater experience though.

I disliked 'Civil War'. The "discourse" is annoying and I wish I hadn't seen it opening weekend haha... Guy invented a war to make a movie about photojournalism? x.com/DiscussingFilm/status/1779570150691238374 (bizarre explanation by Garland why California and Texas have united forces.) Been going through some older Jonathan Demme movies. 'Something Wild' may be the coolest movie of all time. Huge influence on 'Dumb & Dumber'. Doesn't get much cooler than that :-) Retail versions of 'Evil Does Not Exist' are available online... not sure if I should watch at home or wait til May 4 to watch in theaters...

'Monkey Man', 'One More Shot', and 'The Beekeeper'... solid start for action movies in 2024.

I'm hot and cold on Demme but this really did it for me.
