I suppose it’s possible that Apple could be hacked and all the sketchy bm you uploaded could be leaked to Antifa, but it’s probably pretty unlikely this is literally my nightmare. i dont need a blue haired they/them trying to shame me for listening to satanic warmaster.

do y’all not fuck with ITunes Match? It’s like $30 for a year subscription, and lets you upload any music you want to the cloud, and it seemlessly integrates into the Apple Music app on your phone. So, assuming you’re subscribed to Apple Music, can stream the regular music from their servers and stream anything you’ve uploaded yourself right from the same place I suppose it’s possible that Apple could be hacked and all the sketchy bm you uploaded could be leaked to Antifa, but it’s probably pretty unlikely Been doing youtube to mp3 and then matching for years.

On another note. Anybody ever use the Sony Walkman players? I see they aren’t too bad and can go up to 1TB with a card.

Soulseek/filesharing is like smoking for me. It's a dirty habit that probably seems gross, outdated, and like... "how can you still do that with ALL the information and what we KNOW now?" kinda thing. I get it, but just let me do my sad little thing.

I definitely agree that it feels outdated, but with the way music can get taken off streaming at any time, I feel like having my own copies of it feel more justified than ever before.

For sure, there's almost a vinyl collecting vibe to it, which honestly MP3 collections/fileshare collections used to kinda have in the late 90s/early-to-late 2000s.

THEYRE A MUSIC STREAMING PLATFORM. that doesnt even include the endless holes in streaming libraries for cutty shit. i can't take anyone seriously who only consumes music via streaming.

how do people back up their bigass music collections
I have a 5000+ album music collection totaling almost 600GB that I very nearly lost when the motherboard on my last laptop died
short of buying all physical copies (not a millionaire, so) how would you even back this shit up for the long run

I got myself a Synology home server with my stimmy check and two 12tb drives set up in a RAID system so one backs up to the other. I have all my music on there, which I just have set as a folder on my laptop accessed via network. So my iTunes can play and sync it all but takes up zero space on my computer.
I also do this for movies and shows and have like 400+ movies on there (downloaded from soulseek) that I just access on my tv via the VLC app on my firestick.
I do want a tertiary backup for stuff as obviously all that is backed up on two drives it’s still within one unit that if it explodes I’ll be forced to kill myself.

Finally this thread is worthwhile. I still get the majority of music I listen to from download blogs, soulseek and euro forums.

Can you just link it up with an existing wifi network?

What music apps yall use on your phone? At the moment I use pulsar but would be happy to explore something else. Their "artist" view is atrocious.

I’ve heard good things about PlexAmp; seems like it could be an ideal alternative to streaming. It lets you set up a server on your computer and then stream to any device connected via the app. Some of the features require a subscription though, it’s $40/year or $120 for a lifetime pass. www.plex.tv/plexamp/

I was using foobar2000 for years on my old phone, but on my new phone I have been using an app called Oto Music. It's pretty good, I love some of the features, but it has this horrible quirk where it shows you all the artists' tracks before it shows you the albums(at the bottom). You can scroll through just albums themselves, but it's a minor annoyance.
Also interested in some alternatives. I wish that the foobar2000 app was as full-featured as the desktop version. having multiple different "views" would be sick.

If anything is like smoking, it's paying some random Swedish corporation to let me stream music that doesn't even belong to them, but only when they are feeling generous enough to let me listen to the shit that I wanna hear.
Plus, I am sick of being spoon-fed shitty music by algorithms. It's like a form of mind control!

I ran a redundant RAID for a bit myself, but it was a bit of a headache. Make sure you have brand new replacement drives ready to go because 5 years down the line, when a drive goes, if you don't have an exact match (which is inevitably no longer being made) you're still fucked. I switched over to cloud backup a few years ago. I'm using Carbonite, but there are a lot of options out there. I pay for a plan that backs up my computer and a HUGE networked drive. The initial backup takes days (weeks?), but once it's there, it just does incremental backups, synching anything new you add or removing the old that you delete. I think I'm up to $130 annually. Seems steep at first glance, but it's worth it in the long run for peace of mind.
