Fuck people who stand on the edge of the pit and expect to be safe, go stand in the back. If you’re on the edge you have a responsibility to contain the chaos and protect the people behind you, that’s not a spectator position. I’m a big fan of helping people out and picking them up but the best shows are the ones where personal preservation is the only thing on your mind, total lizard brain shit. If I missed a show where someone lost a tooth I’d be so bummed out, that sounds wild. While the edge of the pit is probably the least safe spot at a show, including being in the pit itself, SOMEONE has to be front and center for that shit and this is why "horseshoe crowds" are a thing. Everyone simultaneously trying to be as far from that shit as possible. You can only get so far, especially in small ass venues. My biggest complaint with crowdkilling is that it deters the pile-on

I also worry for a second whether the thumbs up emoji I was sent was in earnest or mocking. Then I go on with my life. I too teach zoomers. Most of mine aren’t exceptionally more soft than millennials. I think the squeaky wheels just get the grease. I think wealthier schools probably get way more of these types. While they aren’t soft it is depressing how unprepared studentd are for college coursework. I had a colleague tell me his kid was listening to an audiobook version of Ready Player 1 in a senior English class. Millennial here, I wouldn't have passed high school without sparknotes. Got my bachelors without needing to do much assighned reading. Not that I'm proud of being a moron, but its doable.

I was definitely a lazy ass student until grad school. If you pay attention in class or know how to find the right information it’s definitely doable. A lot of kids now won’t even put in that much effort now.
I don’t really blame them that much. More so their parents and local voters.

I've been teaching at the university level since 2007 and taught high school before that. Worked at all kinds of schools in the US and Europe. There's no question they are softer and dumber now.

Hell, I know that part of the reason I got into hardcore at all was specifically because of the violence and the energy at the show. Injury is a risk we all take. Also, you know what you're getting into within the first 5 seconds of that band playing. Hell, most of the time, all you need is feedback for people to start wilin' out. I was definitely a lazy ass student until grad school. If you pay attention in class or know how to find the right information it’s definitely doable. A lot of kids now won’t even put in that much effort now. I don’t really blame them that much. More so their parents and local voters. Yo, I fucking wish someone told me during the entry to grad school -- never read anything front to back. Read the abstract, summary, and methods... maybe the results. Come up with 1-3 "thoughtful" comments/questions. And you're done. Then use that extra time to further your own interests. All that mattered in class was that you appeared to have learned the material and that you stroke the prof's ego. I wasted so much time reading lit reviews.

Obviously I don’t love being punched in the face but also the best shows are usually the ones that teeter on the verge of going off the rails and there’s a genuine feeling of “oh shit I gotta keep my head up and pay attention” in the air. Semi-controlled danger comes with some risks and that’s part of the deal. And I say this as a person who is extremely soft and bitch made.

Why are so many zoomers trans? probably because it is now more socially acceptable so people don't have to fear coming out and being disowned by their family without a support network there for them, or like, get brutally murdered. idk, maybe the fact that the internet also allows us to connect with more people and exposes us to a variety of lifestyles that we didn't grow up with might also play role in your perception.

asking why there are more people coming out as trans nowadays is like asking why there's more interracial couples now than the 50's. shit changes.
