I mean, 1.8 does come out to 1⅛ ... if your counting system is base-64 and not base-10.
This reminds me of an actual question: years ago, when I was a juvenile working summers and weekends at my dad's garage, I learned very quickly that most SAE fasteners in an American car are sizes that correspond pretty easily to a metric wrench (i.e., ½" to 13 mm, or ¼" to 6 mm). Later someone told me that the American auto industry quietly switched to metric components in the 1980s and chose sizes that worked about equally well with either set of wrenches. Any truth to that? Was the person maybe confusing this with the switch to listing engine displacements in liters?
Edit: Or is 1.08 equal to 1⅛ in a base-64 counting system? I shouldn't be a dick about math when I'm pretty bad at it myself.

I don't have one of those charts handy but it makes total sense. Even as late as the mid-2000s though you run into real SAE fasteners on American cars. I've stripped out enough Ford 5/8 bolts with 17mm sockets to know, haha (16 works but I always see a big bolt and just assume it's a 17)

(to clarify, those "transition period" American cars are a random mix of metric/imperial)

I mean, I had to get my entire front brakes replaced in June (pads, calipers, and rotors). Since I wen't through family, I only paid their cost on parts, but even then, that was $400. Figure in labor and the shop's markup on parts, and that doesn't really sound wild to me. Very inconvenient and shitty, yes, but not wild.

Not a car, but I'm working on replacing some transistors in a blown DC inverter. My neighbor blew it up, so I offered to fix it for him.
Never again.

Calipers are expensive because there are moving parts. Just pads and rotors (what we typically mean when we say "brake job") should be much cheaper, depending on the car of course. $400 is about what I would pay for that too, but for me, just pads and rotors on my car wouldn't be much more than 100.

I mean, yeah, if you’re replacing calipers it’s gonna be expensive. Brake pads and rotors are hella cheap, I just looked and for my car I can find a set for all four wheels for $120.
Edit: pbcookies beat me to it!

I think it's uncommon these days to straight up get ripped off, because everyone has Google in their pocket now. But then again, the average person isn't going to be able to distinguish between a worn out pad and a caliper with a frozen piston.
In any case, $850 for rear brakes is fuckin [high pitched Bill Burr voice] BA-RUUUUTALLLLLLLL!

Yo pbcookies, question for you. I have a 2011 Honda civic that feels rough to drive, like I can feel every divot and bump in the road. I hear a slight creaking sound when going over speed bumps. I just assumed that my struts are just old and need to be replaced, but is there anything else that would cause this?

I think last time I needed a complete front and back gut job with calipers they wanted $1,500.

If you press down hard with your bodyweight on each corner of the car while it's sitting, you may even be able to narrow it down to which one(s) is/are bad quite easily. Also thank you for the year make model up front, you are a gentleman!

Typically they have a ton of mechanics that run the full spectrum from oil change kids up to A-level master techs. Who you get generally depends on what you're having done. Their oil change kids generally get paid worse than in an indie shop but their experienced masters usually get paid better. Cradle to grave job type situation. OE parts are usually better, whether it's worth the money is up to you
