I was thinking about this yesterday and got really irritated. For someone who considers himself a "hip hop head" (you just know he does) does he not have the most pedestrian and mainstream taste in rap that is humanly possible? From what I can tell, he literally only listens to the upper-echelon of 80s and 90s LEGENDS. Like he exclusively listens to the biggest rappers of all time. It'd be like someone who made a big deal about being into rock, but knew of nothing other than The Beatles, The Stones, and Zeppelin or whatever. I guess it's because it's not really about the music, it's just about being the white punk guy who wears 90s hip-hop shirts, and he wouldn't quite get the same recognition from other white people at Trader Joe's if he was repping Freddie Gibbs or Grisela or whatever.

Yes, and this is true for every genre he likes. He's a human Pandora station.

De La Soul is something he ALWAYS reps. It's as if he thinks people never heard of De La Soul is or like underground hip hop

I'm guessing De La Soul is just the easiest thing for his corny ass to digest.

He wants to be involved in every subculture and wants to be friends with everyone. Can't trust those people.

I'm guessing De La Soul is just the easiest thing for his corny ass to digest. Easy to both defend and point to in case he gets called out. Some person: “Wow, nothing says PMA like “Drop a Gem On ‘em”.” Toby: “Hey, I like more conscious and positive stuff, too. De La Soul is one of my favorites of all time (Note: I doubt he’s heard anything after “3 Feet...”).” And De La Soul’s kind of indisputable, so there it is.
