I think a major difference with Robert Smith/The Cure and other classic bands too is that they seem to still have a real passion for the music. They don't have to do 3 hour shows. They don't have to fight with ticketmaster to make things more feasible for fans. They go way above and beyond the call of duty of where other bands would simply be collecting nostalgia paychecks.
Also, putting aside how I think this new Cure song is legit fantastic, I think its also just the exact lane of what I really want in a Cure song. 4:13 has some decent moments, but its so much more poppy and upbeat, which is cool, but it just felt kinda half hearted. And then prior to that you had the Ross Robinson produced self titled album that has it's moments as well but also doesn't really do it for me. I'd say they haven't had a great album since Bloodflowers, and this new one seems to be really swinging for the fences.
And then on the more superficial levels, the album art is actually pretty sick (especially compared to honestly all of their album covers post-Wish) and the album title is really cool. I'm just all in on this lol.

Admittedly, I know very little about The Cure, but are records like Pornography and Disintegration generally perceived as better than their more commercially successful albums, like say Wish or Kiss Me?

Damn. I’m getting extra hyped on this new record now because of this thread. Gonna run that new track back.

Disintegration is generally considered their best mainstream wise. Pornography is my favorite personally

I think Disintegration and Pornography are generally considered their masterpieces, but I think there is still a lot of love for Wish, Kiss Me, etc. The Top is their only pre Wish album that has a spottier reputation. I really like Wish and Kiss Me, the hits are great and their are great deep cuts but I think those albums do have skippable songs and a few outright clunkers, which you can’t say about most of their other 80s albums. I think just in terms of tone, I tend to go to the cure more for their atmospheric vibe over their more playful feeling. I also really like their earlier punky songs too on 17 Seconds and Faith.

They have a great discography basically into the early 90s. Tons of stuff to enjoy with different sounds. Pornography and Disintegration are the most bleak and atmospheric, they also have tons of great pop songs and all that. Truly one of the GOATs of the era

I'm really digging the new Jack White stuff. Its a return to form, back to doing straight up garage/blues rock shit with some cool guitar tones. I was legit surprised it was actually good.

I want to like the new Sophie, but you can't replicate her sound. Its not a bad album by any means, its just idk not grabbing me.

I’ve never cared about his music (wasn’t even the biggest White Stripes fan tbh) but I haven’t stopped listening to this one. Great production and some seriously nasty riffs. I never thought I’d be backing a Jack White solo album in 2024 but here we are

Wish I saw the Cure discussion happening yesterday. They played four or five songs off of the album when I saw them and I think this thing is going to be fucking great. There are two albums coming out. The one after this will be much lighter in tone. This one is inspired by stuff like Robert's brother dying and is in the same lane as their darker stuff. And the best Cure songs are their longer ones. Sit back and enjoy the ride.
Also, that last Rolling Stones record does rock.
