Exactly! Benjamin Tod was a trainhopping crusty as well if I recall correctly. I mean, look at him, how could he not have been?

Triple postin', but the non recorded songs Dean Johnson performed were unreal. Dude's music is made for the utterly heartbroken.

And he’s a product of the hardcore scene, love to see it. Punks is cowboys. Man, I've been itching to do a zine or something on the punk-to-yeehaw railroad and/or resurgent trend to flaunt hardcore credentials (even in Country?). Moreland, Nick Shoulders, Dylan Earl, Jesse Daniel, Croy, Garret T Capps, (Orville Peck, I guess), IV... All (ex-)punks. I'd read the shit outta that. I'd throw Alynda Segarra (Hurray for the Riff Raff) in there too. Their record from earlier this year is all about their train hopping days, and it's really fucking good.

Re: John Moreland
Back in the early days of Tulsa and OKC hardcore really taking off as solid scenes, played with Thirty Called Arson quite a bit, then The Black Gold Band. Speaking of the latter, Endless Oklahoma Sky is still a great listen.

Speaking of Izaak, he just made me a belt which rocks. Dean is really special. I took a friend who isn't into this kinda stuff normally and he was blown away. Excited to move to Seattle soon so I can catch Mean Dean all the time.

Would love to see people's thoughts on the best 5 country records released in the 21st century? I heard Jeremy Pinnell's "Oh/Ky" and all I could think was how it's one of the best records of the last couple decades (it's so fucking good) and now I want to make my own list because I'm a fucking doooooork.

I love the album after this (Ties of Blood and Affection).
But off the top of my head and in no specific order:
Pick whichever of the first two Sturgill Albums you like best (High Top Mountain for me, Metamodern for most everyone else I think) Mike and the Moonpies - Steak Night at the Prarie Rose Jason Isbell - Southeastern
Jamey Johnson - That Lonesome Song Tyler Childers - Purgatory
If you're allowing Southern/Country Rock as well though, I'd sub Mike and the Moonpies and Jamey Johnson for Blackberry Smoke - The Whippoorwill and Steel Woods - Straw in the Wind and probably sub Southeastern for Decoration Day.

My knowledge of 2001-2010's country is terrible so I'm not gonna get into a full top five for fear of looking like some newjack (I am). Romano's Sleep Beneath The Willow is up there somewhere though.

Hank III - Straight To Hell Drive By Truckers - Dirty South Old Crow Medicine Show - Big Iron World Ryan Bingham - Junky Star Justin Townes Earle - Nothing's Gonna Change the Way You Feel About Me Now
Certainly country adjacent list and more of a favorites list of how I got to what I like now.

In terms of what 21st century record got me to this point... Nick 13's solo album has a bigger part in it than I'd like to admit.

Chris Stapleton - Traveller Sturgill Simpson - Metamodern... Tyler Childers - Purgatory Jason Isbell - Southeastern Turnpike Troubadours – Diamonds and Gasoline
I feel this could be a best of list. Just remembered Cash - The Man Comes Around came out in 2002, that was a juggernaut.

New Crockett dropped. Into it through one spin. Don’t think it’s near his best work but there’s a couple really good tracks on there.
