HBO was also the only network who got millions of subs (5 million in 2018) without creating content at an absurd clip or spending hundreds of millions to billions on licensing.
from a NYT article in 2018
"HBO has, in fact, been a consistent moneymaker. Over the last three years, while allocating more than $2 billion a year to its programming, the network has made nearly $6 billion in profit. But if it is to compete with upstart rivals like Netflix, which plans to lay out some $8 billion this year, its level of spending must increase considerably."
PROFITABLE

HBOs thing was just quality. Even if it wasn't for me it was almost always highly rated and critically well received. Now it's just another shitty streaming service full of mostly crap and the quality gets buried

I have a feeling somebody will pick up Winning Time to boost the "sports content" or whatever.
Even though I know the source material is from the 80s, it'd have been cool if they reached the 00s where Phil Jackson is banging Jeanie and there's all the Kobe/Shaq drama.

Tubi original movies are so bad they’re funny. Like the B movies of the digital age.

Tubi original movies are so bad they’re funny. Like the B movies of the digital age. The best are the movies that clearly never got past the focus groups. There's a blatant ripoff of Se7en on there called Resurrection and the quality makes it look like it was stashed in someone's attic for 30 years.

THERE ARE TUBI ORIGINAL MOVIES? YouTube “Tubi original movie” and check out the trailers for some of these films. If you think b-movies are funny then you’ll most likely get a kick out of Tubi movies.

Sucks about Winning Time, show rules. Imma chalk this one up to Zaslav cause the Max format is so garbage it buries the quality HBO shit under row after row of Discovery reality horseshit. Absolutely insane that streaming services have somehow managed to make me nostalgic for cable w/ DVR days, but I can't even bother with Netflix because the sheer amount of content (99.9% of which I will never devote a second to even checking out) through which I have to sift. Did not help that they buried it in the summer when most people aren't watching TV and basketball isn't even on. HBO/WB whatever even own TNT/TBS where they air NBA games and they could've cross promoted during games but nope, these people are idiots.

PROFITABLE Nah, I'm talking about HBO as part of a streaming service now, which is essentially part of Warner Bros Discovery. HBO itself was profitable, but the app is only just now becoming profitable, and that was after literally shelving a fully completed movie, and removing tons of content from their service. Disney is having to do the same thing to become profitable. I don't know what shenanigans they are going to have to do to be profitable without vastly increasing subscription costs or start showing ads.

Doing an X-files front to back lead up to October. Real ones know tried doing this mid-covid boredom, get around season 5 and i falter. the mytharc gets wildly convoluted around season 4 and i'm still undecided if it's even worth trying to follow. i'll put a random ep on for comfy watchin' all the time though. i rewatched Folie à Deux (s5e19 if anyone wants to toss it on) a month ago and it rocks as much as it ever did. a truly great episode agree, season 4 starts to slack then 5 is the drop off—of course there are true gems found in any season. When I’m not doing a full rewatch, I tend to only watch monster of the week eps, so the rewatch was prompted by missing those key myth arc eps, many of which hold up extremely well, especially s1-3. I’m on 2 currently and it’s all fresh. I dunno, the show is such a vibe. It’s better with a little airtime between eps but there’s so many so I’m doing a steady binge, 1-2 eps a day

Started that Telemarketers miniseries last night. I was going in expecting it to be a comedy, and it’s not, but it’s still super interesting, gonna try to finish it off tonight. Pretty good doc series. I've only watched the first two episodes. Those orgs/police unions are fucking crooked. im 2 episodes in, great docuseries ima finish it tonight

yeah that pissed me off about winning time.
i knew the show was dead in the water when the creator started tweeting about how people needed to watch it.
season 2 didn't have the same oomph as the first, and it was noticeable.
still though, to end a season prematurely and crush a great show like they did just pisses me off.

I wish there was a way to just be served HBO stuff on Max. I do not give a fuck about Discovery content. Kind of shitty you sign up for an app for The Sopranos and Succession and now you get suggested People Magazine Investigates and Halloween Baking Championships. I hope a shark eats Jason Momoa.

I believe theres like an HBO tab or whatever on the app if you want to just browse HBO stuff, but the UI does not make it easy to find.

Yeah I hate all the discovery shit being shoved down my throat.
Though I will say I've been throwing on Chopped every now and then, a bona fide Food Network classic.
