Metro zu, LUM, and teamsesh (bones specifically) for sure influential and could all be in the top 10, but for better or worse(mostly worse) Travis and Rocky have influenced the game so much in the 2010s. 🤷🏻♂️
Raider Klan X TeamSESH era will be studied by anthropologists decades from now. It was the genesis for so much shit in modern culture it’s insane.
Lil B and Clams Casino birthed music as far as I’m concerned tho.

i was there, and outside of kyoto and yoshi city the first four years or so of yung lean’s career were a joke; borderline disastrous. the beats on some of those viral songs were great but he was totally unlistenable. his aesthetic wasn’t even influential within hip hop at all. maybe it was a hit with a certain tumblr crowd of ironic teenagers who photoshopped themselves with an arizona iced tea background. like that’s a career highlight? it’s no coincidence that lean’s trajectory directly coincided with the rise of bladee and drain gang (the obviously superior group).

Lil B was living in 2019 when everyone else was living in 2009. He's my generation's Kafka. He's better than Tupac and Biggie combined.

I feel like Lil Uzi Vert belongs in the discussion. So much current rap I hear feels like it’s directly in the lineage of Lil Uzi and Carti.

i was super deep in it all in that era. kinda got sick of hardcore and almost exclusively wen't to rap shows for a few years.
caught yung lean's first shows here, they were not very good at all.
felt like the vibe was super punk rock adjacent bc the promoters doing those shows weren't exclusively rap promoters.
wish i could remember all of the rap shows i caught back then, and silly shit i got into.
met slim thug, he had a massive joint and was cool as hell.
that first smokers club tour, first mac miller appearance, plus krit and curren$y just decimating it.
i can remember blowing dense nuggs of fat buds smoke at main attraktionz all night, and then trying to meet them after, drunk as fuck and they just curved me instantly. love that.
action bronson going from 150-200 cap rooms to huge clubs.
riff raff's first three shows here, dude was legit made out of cocaine at that point. taking breaks mid show to go rip.
2 chainz bringing a stadium lighting rig to a 1200 cap club had me blinded.
seeing lil b was a life changing experience, no lie. had the whole club on the stage singing along to task force.
juicy j came to town like every six months back then, and i wen't every single time.
wen't to see rick ross when bmf dropped, 30 deep, smoked blunts till i felt ill.
saw asap yams shortly before he died.
king louie, dude was so out of breath.
eventually i got a job actually working for some of my hip hop heroes from growing up in the 90s. this was actually a curse, never work with people you idolize.
maybe a couple years later in 2014-15, but helping/seeing the progression of skepta going from small clubs to big ass venues within 2 years was hella cool.
simpler times my dudes. now i'm just old and out of touch.

ugh i mean if we're going there.
the most influential rapper since the mid 00s gotta be gucci mane 100%.
the only rapper that i used to have "parties" for almost every mixtape release.
that was a lot of "parties" back then.
"parties" = me drinking and smoking in the basement, blasting gucci.
that guy had as much influence on myself and my friends as any other rapper, ever.
consistently listened to as much as possible from like chicken talk (06) to everybody looking (16).
sorta fell off since, but the respect is still there.
i'm 41 years old, and spent almost all my life since the age of 10 pretty immersed in it all as a fan.

I feel like Lil Uzi Vert belongs in the discussion. So much current rap I hear feels like it’s directly in the lineage of Lil Uzi and Carti. Yeah, I considered both. But they are building on a sound that was already established. For sure Carti the most influential rapper of the 2020s so far.

speaking of 06 gucci, i’d love to hear a return of the mid 00s production like this. not gonna post the actual rapper's song because he sucks so hard. i think that ian dude is also rapping on vintage shawty redd style production (another bad meme rapper not worthy of your time at all).
edit: more zaytoven snap production than shawty redd but still really cool to hear in 2024…

Ian has been the first rapper that made me feel like an out of touch old guy. I don’t wanna hate on anyone doing their thing and having fun with it, but something about Ian just rubs me the wrong way. Industry plant type vibes from him.
Osamason and Nettspend are probably the two rappers that are doing some cool things production wise in underground rap. I don’t fw every song I hear from them, but the ones I do like hit hard.

i was pretty hard on ken carson when he first came out but he’s starting to find his own sound and dropped some terrific songs
this one is just nuts, the mixture of witch house with rage sounds badass. he can’t rap for shit but the vibe is intoxicating…

I wanna hear some of those stories about 90’s hiphop heroes first one: can't name names, but a member of a very influential group (a group that i had bought their tape at the age of 12 )from the 90s was a nightmare to deal with. or rather, their entire organization and management. being unable to speak with anybody unless using a 3rd party mediator, for anything at all. temper tantrums over promoters not sending $ for transportation fast enough, just minor stuff that most artist don't sweat or make problems over. however, it did lead to some interesting scenarios, like them getting painted portraits all over a mansion that was part of some beer company private party they'd been booked at. i negotiated for two of the paintings, for my boss and myself, so i wen't to the event to make sure everything was ok. however, in the thick of it, they didn't want to give up two paintings, or even one when i asked at the end of the night. this was a strike against the contract, so i just grabbed the biggest painting i could see and speed walked out of there. nearly got destroyed by security while some guys from a certain youtube show (dudes dead now?) watched me quickly negotiate my way out of there. aside from that, just minor bummer type of stuff from other legacy rappers. we're talking defunct tax numbers, and overall bad business/tax avoidance.
