Watched A Touch of Sin last night, it may be too on the nose of its examination of violence and corruption in contemporary China, but still really good nonetheless.

Weekend watches in order of enjoyment:
HEAT (1986) FROM DUSK TILL DAWN A REPORT ON THE PARTY AND THE GUESTS LASERBLAST BEYOND THE GATES
Heat was so good man. Just the right amount of wry humor, plenty of ass-kicking, Reynolds was magnetic, the jazzy score was perfect. Loved it.

Yeah, that Eurovision movie sucked. Will Ferrell hasn't made a good movie in a bit, what gives.

Agreed. I don’t think there’s a movie I’ve seen more than Step Bros, it’s been a real bummer watching the turds Ferrell has been in. Last one I really liked was the other guys and that was 10 years ago. Some ok ones in there but nothing I’d watch again.

I don’t know what it is, but for the most part, since Corona started, my attention span for movies has been awful. I cannot get into most things or spend more than five minutes off my phone. So if I even get through something, it takes hours. It seems like all I enjoy right now are very stupid movies or older ones from my childhood.
Posted about it recently, but my favorite new watch was The Vast of Night. I think Jordan said he dug it, too. Great atmosphere, snappy dialogue, long, drawn out shots. Loved it.
Tried watching King of Staten Island, didn’t make it more than 20 minutes. Pete just doesn’t click for me.
Snatchers was a dumb ass movie and I loved it.
Still need to watch 5 Bloods.
Did Heart and Souls last night. Hadn’t seen it since I was probably 10. Shit’s cute.
Jason Goes to Hell is still terrible, but I love it.
Lean On Me is absurd, Freeman is a sociopath in it. Stand And Deliver is as enjoyable as it’s always been and the far superior movie about education and tests in tougher communities.

- - PRIVATE RESORT (1985)
80s juvenile comedy, so you know what comes with the territory. But you may not expect this farce to be so watchable, entertaining and funny. Johnny Depp, The Diceman, Leslie Easterbrook, Hector Elizondo ensue in some beach hijinks that, at times, can be pretty funny. Emily Longstreth (a new favorite) provides the heart.
- - PRIVATE SCHOOL (1983)
My second movie in the "Private" Trilogy after Private Resort, and this one is even more cliched, more ludicrous, more rowdy and unquestionably more raunchy. The 80s had clear movie stars though, and Phoebe Cates was one of them. Even in this subpar juvenile romp with nothing on it's mind except bad behavior, she excels and comes away unscathed. Also genre hero Betsy Russell is the "mean girl" that you just cannot help but to love. She is actively trying to prank Cates and steal her man (Modine) but the movie is so fast and loose it can't slow down to have consequences that rise higher than a "watch this" get-back stunt, and its all the better for it.
- - THE BIG PICTURE (1989)
This movie (even though it came first) is like the first 15 minutes of Robert Altman's THE PLAYER but stretched out to feature length - and it is constantly hilarious and engaging. A slew of interesting characters and household 90s names helps it out - especially Jennifer Jason Leigh doing a thing (& making a hilariously witty joke about documentary filmmaking) & Martin Short as an agent that talks a lot but doesn't say anything.
I've said that The Player isn't as biting of a critque of Hollywood as people make it out to be and rather just a big in joke where everyone pokes fun at each other over drinks. THE BIG PICTURE, although not biting, is definitely much more of a roast, but still light enough on its feet so that it is not mean or smartalec. It moves to the next laugh too quickly to be pointed at any one subject too hard. Of course since its about how movies are cut and pasted to be molded into something they were never meant to be, studio runners have the finger pointed at them the most here. Buuuuut since this is Christopher Guest's first movie, and he wen't on to make several more and stay around in Hollywood for years, something tells me that everyone in town had a good honest laugh at this one too.

If anyone likes Midsommar enough to buy a Limited 4k UHD Collector's edition (or Limited Bluray Collector's Edition) A24 has a pre-order up. It comes with a 62-page illustrated booklet with a foreword written by Scorsese. It's a bit pricey at $45 but it will easily go for double that price on ebay. The 4k edition is probably going to sell out in the next hour or two. There's only 341 copies left out of 2000. Make sure you click 4k if that's the one you want. The interface is not very clear. shop.a24films.com/collections/all-products/products/midsommar-directors-cut-collectors-editionEDIT: the 4k edition is sold out now

- - BLOOD GAMES (1990)
This movie is friggin' good. Like, real good. Sometimes you think you've seen everything and then Vinegar Syndrome goes & puts this out and it becomes one of your new favorite movies. Exploitation, horror, feminist thriller, call it what you want. Call it terrific. There is NO drag. It NEVER lets up.
Some rednecks lose a baseball game to BABE & THE BALLGIRLS (can we get a spinoff sequel just titled this PLEASE) and they are the ones trying to get revenge, leaving our lethal softball ladies to fight for their lives. At first you think its this. Then you think its that. And it never is. Its constantly raising eyebrows. Our protagonists, who are full of character displaying real stories and real feelings, go thru hell. And by the end I'm out here crying for them. A genre masterpiece in my eyes. I couldn't be any higher on it right now.

TBH I did not like it. I thought the premise was good, but the execution was sorely lacking.

A buddy of mine and I drank every time there was a "zoinks!" moment in Private Resort. The movie is like 75 minutes and we were shitfaced by the end of it. Also, it's wild that Dice is in it.

Watched Eating Raoul and Synonyms on The Criterion Channel.
I don't think a movie like Eating Raoul could fly in 2020, the overall tone of the film may have not aged well, but I still found myself laughing my ass off. If John Waters made a movie about a boring couple who decides to kill rapists and Nazis, this would be it.
Synonyms is pretty bonkers. Got an early Leos Carax vibe from this, the main actor (making his film debut) had this energy that reminded me of Denis Levant. His performance is enough to save the film from going too off the rails.

Shia apparently got his chest tattooed for real for the role. Also, it appears he has cauliflower ear in both ears, wonder if that's make up or if he got them for the role. Movie looks like patented David Ayer ass.

Everyone needs to watch CHARLEY VARRICK immediately. Walter Matthau is as good (if not better) here as in Pelham and it's just a picture-perfect look at everything I want in an early-70s movie.
Also, watched my first Antonioni, BLOW-UP, and TBH I didn't really dig it. Some very cool framing and shot composition through a lot of this but the plot is truly a hot-air balloon and the main character is extremely unlikeable. Hope it's kind of an outlier for Antonioni because I'm very excited for L'Avventura and some of his others.

Tax Collector looks like an Ayer greatest hits movie, which is fine. He's made some stuff I like and some stuff I definitely dont, but I love Shia and looking forward to seeing him in this. You know he's gonna make some choices.
