I completely understand the sentiment of "hollywood jerking itself off"
other than having "film savvy" people appreciate it for what it is. I.E. the cinematography, there isn't a whole lot to like about it.
I compare it heavily to the Greatest Showman. As a whole, I like the Greatest Showman soundtrack better, but those two songs (City of stars / fools who dream) are better than anything in Greatest Showman.
But I think it is a better film than Greatest Showman.

someone said hawke's best role was in first reformed. wrong: the correct answer is the before trilogy (aka the best trilogy of all time), specifically this exact scene. his performance is absolutely flawless (perhaps the below isn't so emotionally crushing without proper context, but man - 2:46 says it all).

La La Land is like the biggest crowd pleaser ever, no matter what industry. Hollywood has always made films like that and they've usually been loved by everyone. Just having a romantic tale between the two leads would've sufficed, not to mention adding all the great stuff by Chazelle that elevated it to a great film.

I've been putting off watching these flicks for years, need to change that this weekend.

Watching La La Land for the first time. Can't believe I've never seen it before. For someone in the industry, it really resonates. Beautiful picture. Pretty sure it was made almost exclusively for people in the industry. Why cause it sucks hollywoods dick so hard

I did not enjoy La La Land. Musical for people who don't like musicals.

I honestly haven't seen many musicals outside of the known classics and Ivan Pyryev stuff but La La Land rubbed me the wrong way and felt extremely... Fake? I just couldn't get into it.

I hate musicals but have zero interest in watching La La Land. Showbiz movies are as bad as bands that write songs about being in bands. And I have an irrational hatred of Emma Stone and these aren't the types of movies I like Ryan Gosling in either.

The Getaway w Alec, Madsen and Basinger from 94 is still an awesome action flick, written by Walter Hill. Crazy how those were panned then when an embarrassment of riches we’re had.
John Carpenters Vampires however is still bad. No reappraisal on this one yet. The first third is decent, then..,

Ryan Gosling just seems like he's acting sarcastically through the whole film.

Watch the first 6 or so minutes of this. Pyryev musicals were fucking intense, hilarious and the music in them is bonkers good. youtu.be/r5OY3HuYegg

I watched Paddington 2 this morning and cried lmao. Good shit.
I watched La La Land on a plane last year ready to shit all over it but I actually really, really liked it. I love musicals, though, so... It's extremely charming and has a lot of heart. It's white as fuck tho.

Watched the Superfly remake since I figured it was gonna leave theaters soon. It was ok. It felt like what happened if Hype Williams decided to do a remake.

Leave No Trace made me cry the hardest I have all year. Comes out closer to me this Friday, can't wait to see. Ideal Home was a passably entertaining comedy with sporadic laughs here and there. Steve Coogan and Paul Rudd help elevate the familiar comedy set up. It was also done by the same director as Hamlet 2.

Come and See makes every other war movie in the past 40 years look corny as hell.

Come and See is one of the most disturbing things I've ever seen. Absolutely one you will never forget. Great film though, either way.
