Brother, enabling a junkie is like the number 1 “do not do this for family and friends”. You don’t stop enabling them because it can accelerate their disease, you stop enabling because it perpetuates it on your watch. The fact that it can accelerate their decline is a simple fact of addiction, and the enabling by family and friends is often a large factor in allowing them to continue using without consequences. You don’t stop in hopes they get worse, you stop because you’re not making anything better by supporting their addiction. If it causes them to decline to rock bottom when your support stopped, then it’s just proof you were delaying the inevitable. OK, so not enabling is one thing. Cutting someone off cold turkey knowing that death is the probable outcome is what I'm quibbling with. Typically with a junkie you wean them off through treatment and other drugs that help the recovery process, you know, if you actually care about the person and want to save them. It's a terrible analogy built on a false premise. We aren’t talking about how to treat the disease. We’re talking about how the family needs to handle enabling their addict. I’ve been there, on both sides of the coin, myself and a family member. There comes a point where a family that wants their loved one to get better has to stop enabling them, even if it means throwing them to the wolves. You will never enable an addict out of addiction, and you’ll never get them into recovery with a $50 bill. Cut off the money and suddenly that offer for a ride to detox becomes far more appealing. Stop enabling the democrats by supporting them, and suddenly them doing what they say they will becomes their only chance for survival.

What is it exactly that you people think the Democrats would do that they won’t do unless people who already do not vote reaffirm their commitment to not voting?
And somehow a party of multiple disparate coalitions is imagined as a macrosubject you can threaten…. It doesn’t any god dang SENSE

Chevron deterrence OVERTURNED Sorley boy tell me what this means It means that the rules people had learned to work with may or may not no longer exist so neither the regulators nor the regulated know what they are tasked with doing. A bunch of zoomer congressional staffers will have to furiously google trying to figure out what means what so they can tell the successful small businessman how to work with complex rules governing stuff none of them understands.

It’s not like things were great as is. A lot of regulations vary way too much by state, which poses serious coordination problems. For example, California is such a large economy and plays such a massive role in the national supply chain and regulatory environment that it has an outsized influence on what other states have to do, and those states don’t have an economy as large so they are up shit creek without a paddle. Moreover, it’s a problem that the organizations associated with the Port of LA (terminal operators, ILWU, etc.) have to oppose air pollution regulations because that will make them less competitive than ports in states with less stringent rules. If the west coast ports lose their competitive edge, the whole west coast’s economy has a serious problem. So, it wasn’t an ideal situation.
All the same, however, the situation as-is provides some baseline of understanding of where things are going and everyone has to put their foot in the boot at roughly the same time: The Port of Savannah made an unprecedentedly large purchase of zero emissions cargo-handling equipment from Konecranes even though Georgia’s regulatory environment is (I’d imagine) far less demanding than California’s because they know which way the wind is blowing. But what does everyone do if they no longer know what it means when a federal agency tells them to do? Congress will either make rules that are extremely demanding without providing a means to accomplish them OR they will undermine important regulations and create even more problems for the individual states who all will have even more divergent rules, but either way you have some fucking moron congressional representative with no expertise or willingness to listen to those who do in a position of greater power. And the hammer will come down on those least able to do anything about it.

Chevron deterrence OVERTURNED Sorley boy tell me what this means In a given case there's a test or burden of proof to be met by the party bringing the action or making a claim (beyond a reasonable doubt, preponderance of the evidence etc.). When a party was challenging an administrative action, Chevron deference basically meant that they needed to show the agency's interpretation of its power was irrational or unreasonable. That was a difficult standard to meet, so the agencies had a ton of leeway to interpret their own power and make their own rules. As a practical matter it basically just means courts can be more skeptical in approving agency action. I don't think it's as devastating as the news makes out but it will be harder for agencies like the EPA to be aggressive in making rules to restrict pollution, for example.
