I was just using a lathe a little smaller than that an hour ago. Invaluable machines but absurdly dangerous. Even the smaller ones will absolutely obliterate you if you get anything caught in them.
Stuff flying off of them will kill you too. Worked in a place where a dude left a small magnetic block on the chuck, turned the machine on and shot that thing clear through the roof of the shop.
I cannot image how gnarly an 19th century line shaft-style machine shop would have been.

Thereβs an Okuma LS450 from the late 60s at my work that I use. Itβs a workhorse. Any machine that cuts 1/4β deep passes on solid steel without breaking a sweat does not give a single fuck about human flesh |
