Dare to Dream Big
First off, my apologies for being late on the late newsletter. The day got away from me yesterday. Sh*t happens, lotsa' moving parts right now after Hurricane Helene. Nonetheless here we are... remaining accountable.
As I'm about to turn 62 tomorrow (Oct 3rd) I can't even begin to count all the dreams I've had over the decades. A dream is nothing more than a goal which hasn't been accomplished yet. In the pursuit of our goals sometimes we will fail. That's never a reason to give up. Failure is necessary - it's part of the process. We need to flip the script on failures and learn to see them as a test. What's my next move in 'The Gap'.
That's a writer's term... "The Gap Between Expectation and Result." We take an action from our subjective world thinking we know the outcome. Then the objective world collides with our action - the Universe doesn't comply and a gap cracks open. What we do in that place - our next action determines our true character. That's when the pressure is on.
There will also most likely be risk involved. This is when it's imperative to turn off that inner critic's voice - those demons of doubt that make us think we should give up and call it a day. Don't! Instead take ownership of our failures - do not make excuses or blame others. The buck stops with us. Sadly, our culture these days supports the victim mentality. It's everyone else's fault. A victim allows his or her success to be limited by all the external circumstances. As long as we continue that type of mindset we will experience life as a struggle, and see others as a threat. I get that - I'm guilty myself - for many years I blamed my addiction and other problems in life on being abused as a child and having an incredibly tough upbringing. Foster homes. homelessness, drug and alcohol issues, lock-up, betrayals... it wasn't until I stopped playing the blame game that I turned the corner on all of all that.

Accountability means we accept our role in things that happen. We do it in success right? Well we also need to do the same when we fail.

We also need to stay determined. To be relentless in our pursuit of goals. Develop a deep sense of urgency - I must have it. Everything in life is based on desire. Think about how driven we were for all the bad shit we wen't after in life. We need to do be even more driven toward our positive goals.
Also remain flexible - ready to shift. Things will happen. I have a client who I coach that suffered an injury a month out from an Ironman and he had to pull out of the race. Naturally he was bummed - but we did a re-evaluation. What can he do in the meantime to improve. Number one, stay clean and sober - attend his meetings - eat better- meditate more - read and sign up for a race next year. Have that carrot dangling. Just keep moving forward.
As a Test: Pick three goals and three areas where you'd like to improve. Write them down. Get after it. Defeat resistance when it rears its ugly head... and trust me it will. I highly recommend reading "The War of Art" by Steven Pressfield
