Also technically, MCR came from the hardcore scene. Frank Iero was in this screamo band from North Jersey called Pencey Prep, and he laid down vocals on Each Breath Haunted, the record by the Banner. Fall Out Boy, also. And the more you widen the scope, the less infrequent it is. Tons of the 90s grunge and alternative bands were formed by people who were in hardcore and punk bands before.

idk maybe because this is a message board largely centered around hardcore and related styles of music and it's fun for us to baselessly speculate about?

I dunno, it makes more sense to discuss, I dunno, which bands dropped demos that were good and how they might drop a really good record next or regions of the country with bands that have interesting styles rather than guessing which mediocre hyped band is going to “make it big.” Which, for a lot of them, turns out to be financially suicidle for the members of said band.

If we start using board to place bets on which bands are going accomplish what heights in their "career", I'm in. $500 on Turnstile plateauing and beginning to decline in hype within two years.

Frank Iero was in this screamo band from North Jersey called Pencey Prep, and he laid down vocals on Each Breath Haunted, the record by the Banner. that isn’t a fair comparison. turnstile ~was~ a hardcore band and for a really long time. MCR was just hardcore adjacent

$500 on your band not accomplishing shit ever and probably never even headlining a single gig I am completely fine with that. I play music because I enjoy doing so, like a normal person. I don't expect us to get particularly "big" because no one in the band is exceptionally talented, nothing we write is really breaking the mold, and it's not a style that's really in vogue in any way.

I dunno, man, being incapable of conceptualize the the state of finding something intrinsically enjoyable or valuable indicates that you’re emotionally stunted. Not enviable in any way! Continue speculating about whether or not a band you don’t like will reach a wider audience and capitalize on it.

With Board behind you, anything can happen. The ultimate success of a hardcore band is being dogshit but getting to play sick shows just because some guy in the band is cool and well-liked. Always wanted that for myself.

By the time PT had Nightmare out they'd been a band for damn near a decade right? But they were still opening 2 years after for bullshit weak nostalgia cash grab bands like Venom Inc who I fucking know were NOT outselling a group like PT at that time cause metal got a pathetic gatekeepy elder complex.
Not even close to Turnstile trajectory.

i may not like turnstile's music but i am most certainly impressed with how they turned a trapped under ice side project and weekend hobby into a fledging career. guys who never reach any sorta mountain in anything whatsoever use the same excuse: well i never wanted this to be anything more than just guys being dudes! bullshit, if the opportunity presented itself you'd for sure take it. maybe you should aim higher and be more ambitious.

With how fractured and A.D.D the monoculture is and how shitty the guitar music industrial complex has been since 2008 I'd take that same bet. The only way my mind would change is if another similar background/style band was rising rn with them.

I don't think you understand how people forming and playing in bands works, kind of like how you make comments on pedals and amps and shit but also have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. I've played music with plenty of people who have been in bigger bands. I've been around for a while. I'd like to be in a band that's capable of writing and recording an good LP, but I don't think I'd enjoy touring nine months out of the year or something like that (not that I've been in any more than one band I thought had that capacity). Anyhow, dumb conversation n I'm out.

Some people just want to play music cause they love it, and don't want all the bullshit that comes with blowing up. It's cool that people ARE ambitious and thinking with a higher sense of purpose or whatever the fuck, but it's also totally cool to just wanna do your own thing at your own pace. It boils down to your definition of success, which is entirely subjective. I'd be cool with being in a band that put out one sick record, and just plays a few local gigs every now and then. That's it hahaha.

Hawthorne Heights had chart-topping single in 2006 and their vocalist was barely packing out a 250 capacity all-ages venue less than ten years later. It’s a stupid thing to speculate about. Why care about how big any of these bands get in the first place? We’re all deeply invested in it, OK??
