i use a combo of Merlin and eBird personally 🐦👀 I like the Audubon app, but never tried Merlin. Sibley has the best physical field guide, but their app stinks. |

I haven’t listened to music since 9/11 but I do like the way Spotify lets me skip podcast ads compared to the Apple app so I might stick with it for now.

I like to bring my binoculars while on a hike or bike ride and stop every once in awhile to see what's around. Here's a random ipod question: I dropped mine a few years ago, and when powered up, it says it needs to be restored to factory settings. Is there any way I can extract all the music on there before restoring it?
I'm on a mac fwiw

I'm on a Mac fwiw
There is definitely free software out there that lets you take the music off your iPod, as long as it still shows up as a mountable drive when you plug into your computer. Can't remember the names of the ones I've used anymore, but a quick google search should do it. |

I believe there may be a way to boot it up in safe mode when connecting to your computer, at which point a third party program can prob extract stuff. Idk exactly how it works but def look into something along those lines. |

the amount of stupid hoops spotify makes you jump through to listen to your own files via their app on your phone is extremely annoying! it's almost as if they do not want me to do it! I gave up on Spotify years ago for this reason. I pay $30 a year for iTunes Match and I can get all of the music saved on my hard drive across all of my devices. EDIT: I have to pay for Apple Music on top of that, but I'm still scamming them for a student discount. |

We need something like spotify but only by and for diy bands and indie labels. I’m sure they would pay at least a whole cent per stream because it would be run by good people, rather than a greedy faceless corporation. I believe what you're looking for is called Bandcamp. My only issue with Bandcamp is that their app doesn't have a discover/"radio" feature like their website does. i kid |

I switched to Tidal in August for the better quality. IMO it's definitely worth it if you have decent gear.

Everyone buy 512gb iPod Classics from this guy like I did at the beginning of the pandemic when my last one died and then get on Soulseek. www.etsy.com/shop/PiratePTiPodsThats just another thing to carry which is not what i want to be honest. If you dont have huge storage on your iphone, get a micro sd card reader. I had one that charged my phone at the same time. Got to admit, i hate that everytime i change my iphone i have to reupload my mp3s onto it. I despise apple music /itunes. Edit- I have two perfectly good working ipods somewhere. Honestly, the only thing that stopped me using them was that i couldnt use bluetooth without plugging something else in. |

I have an iPod from them (and have mentioned them on board I think) and highly recommend them, but you are 100% right about Apple Music/iTunes knee capping the ability to upload, even on iPhones.
