Thanks for the suggestions muchachos, appreciate it. I've been watching as much youtube as I can, and there's actually a casting pond in my neighborhood so maybe I'll hit that up. I think part of my problem is that I have so many other outdoor hobbies, I can't afford to spend endless hours learning a new one. I just want to be able to throw my rod in the car when I'm headed out surfing or hiking and be able to have fun with it. Looks like classes are starting up again so I'll try to hit one of those too. The cool thing about it is that you don't need to invest a ton of time so long as you're cool with buying commercially tied flies. With trout and or salmon it's more presentation than it is the ability to dump a whole line. There's enough info out there to learn how to cast better than anyone would likely need to. Go out and have fun.

I ordered a bunch of 1oz jig heads to make squid jigs for the upcoming salmon season. I’m an idiot and didn’t check the hook size and they turned out to be these enormous size 6, where as salmon should be between a 1 and 3. Spent like $40 and can’t use them lol

Definitely doing more fishing this year.
Drove out to one of my absolute favorite spots in CO a week or so ago. Landed a gorgeous tie dye and Brookie throwing a yellow creek hopper.
I need to pick up my fly rod again. It’s not easy fishing out here just spin casting.

Fuck yeah, I was thinking about starting a fishing thread, but glad one already exists. Anyone here flyfish? Just caught a couple Brookies and a Brown trout last weekend off a dry fly on the Carson River Edit: I'm seeing fly talk after perusing the thread. It is the way.

if your thumb is that uneducated, I can't imagine any of your other appendages are getting it done.

also probably didn't bother reading the under side of the rod which tells you the min and max lure weight to use

You know what, guys? Why don’t we just go and hammer it out on the river instead of hammering on each other?

I haven't fished a conventional set up in a long time, but baitcasters are the ones with the button right? I always hated those. Spinners > Baitcasters in my apinion

Baitcaster = exposed spool, thumb + some sort of inertia weight control to avoid backlash.

I'm a total newbie, but I had a chance to fish a bit in Lake Powell this weekend. Caught a nice lil brown trout and was super stoked on it. I didn't know it at the time, but the NPS is offering $25 for any brown trout caught in Lake Powell (I guess their population is gettin outta hand). Should have cashed in for some beer money, but I let him go.

I don’t think they do well enough in the PNW to become invasive.

my buddy and I wen't surf perch fishing on the southern oregon coast and messed around on the rogue this weekend. saw some nice chinook but didn't have salmon tags. fun times even though we didn't catch shit. I have a guided trip in 3 weeks and a few more long weekends near some great spots this summer so I'm hoping to step my game up.

Ooh I've missed this thread. Camped near the Kern River in CA a few weeks ago, with the intention of catching some native trout species. Roads were closed because of dry conditions, so I couldn't get to Golden Trout country ☹️. Did catch a few beautiful Kern River tie dye naturals though! Gotta love the fight on these non-stock fish, even if they're only 6-8" big. All safely released back into the water. Edit: tie dye = rain.bow, that's a good spice.

guess i put the line on wrong on my new reel. Was ready to fish, flipped the bail yesterday and all the line just started popping off nonstop before i even cast. felt like a noob and got mad.

It can twist coming off the bulk spool, but it also sounds like maybe you added too much and/or of too stiff/high lb test for the size of the reel.

A couple weeks ago I checked out a creek I’ve had my eye on for years. I tied on a #14 yellow stimulator and got a strike on the first cast. After missing a couple more, I finally hooked into one of the nicest skinny-water fish I’ve ever caught: a beautiful 14” resident r.ainbow. Released carefully. It was sharing a hole with a couple sockeye salmon in full spawning color, which was pretty cool to see.
I landed a couple more smaller ‘bows, and then wrapped it up by saving my 7-year-old son from drowning when he was washed down some rapids. Pretty nice day on the creek.

It was 12lb test (i do usually use 8-10), but the reel should be able to handle it. I think i must've some how wound it the opposite way then what it was on the spool so it just wanted to bounce off. Going to try redo it after work and pay better attention.
