A couple weeks ago I checked out a creek I’ve had my eye on for years. I tied on a #14 yellow stimulator and got a strike on the first cast. After missing a couple more, I finally hooked into one of the nicest skinny-water fish I’ve ever caught: a beautiful 14” resident r.ainbow. Released carefully. It was sharing a hole with a couple sockeye salmon in full spawning color, which was pretty cool to see. I landed a couple more smaller ‘bows, and then wrapped it up by saving my 7-year-old son from drowning when he was washed down some rapids. Pretty nice day on the creek. oh damn. i bet your adrenaline wen't through the roof. glad everyone ended up okay!

Going kayak fishing with my dad tomorrow. I'm more excited to yak around the bay than fish but it should be fun.

It can twist coming off the bulk spool, but it also sounds like maybe you added too much and/or of too stiff/high lb test for the size of the reel. naw, i made sure it wasn't too much. It was 12lb test (i do usually use 8-10), but the reel should be able to handle it. I think i must've some how wound it the opposite way then what it was on the spool so it just wanted to bounce off. Going to try redo it after work and pay better attention. Take the spool off, soak it in water for 20 minutes or so, and try putting the spool back on in the opposite direction. I do this move all the time when I re-spool my reels. You shouldn’t need to unwind the whole thing.

Ooh I've missed this thread. Camped near the Kern River in CA a few weeks ago, with the intention of catching some native trout species. Roads were closed because of dry conditions, so I couldn't get to Golden Trout country ☹️. Did catch a few beautiful Kern River tie dye naturals though! Gotta love the fight on these non-stock fish, even if they're only 6-8" big. All safely released back into the water. Edit: tie dye = rain.bow, that's a good spice. Dude! I love love love fishing the western Sierras, but I don’t think I’ve fished them that far south. That’s like east of Bakersfield area, yeah?

I tried using my buddy's a few weeks back in Colorado but couldn't get the hang of it. He caught a nice tie dye and brook trout on it. I've gone out a few times this summer but I've had trouble getting anything but sunfish. Better than nothing I suppose, but the tie dyes and bass have eluded me.

It's actually an old fiberglass rod from the 70s that I inherited from my uncle, a Browning Silaflex. issa fucking workhorse and really fun to fish in small streams. I don't like Tenkara rods either, tried one at a local shop and didn't like the action. Keep at it dude, landing your first trout/bass will allll be worth it. Go out with your buddy and have him teach you some tips! Trout and bass can both be extremely cagey.

I fish for bass and besides one random perch, I've only ever hooked bass and never got a sunny despite my lake brimming with them

It's been slower than usual around here all summer, I think the drought + heat is to blame. I have a couple of buddies at work who fish and they haven't caught shit.
I got a tiny little rain.bow up at Coldwater Lake in WA on my first cast and saw lots of porkers hanging around, hoping to head back in the fall with my flyrod when they're more active.

It’s been cold and dry for a couple days, so I wen't to the river today to try for steelhead. Got into a large, mean-looking dolly varden instead. It was the biggest fish I’ve caught in years. Released on a barbless hook.

BrettSD let’s move this over to the fishing thread. I recently set myself up with a Piscifun Sword 5/6wt. It’s dirt cheap on Amazon, made in China, but appears of decent quality. If you’re going after small freshwater fish and don’t need a fancy drag system, I don’t think there’s a reason to spend more than $100 on a reel. I don’t know shit, however.

I don’t think there’s a reason to spend more than $100 on a reel If you're fishing panfish, small trout, bass I agree. Even then I like good gear, and anodized cnc aluminum with a sealed disc drag are worth the cheddar. Saltwater, big trout on 6x tippet, etc... Yeah, worth it (though likely not what they get for an Abel)

I’m in Colorado, so I don’t think I need a gnarly set up. I definitely feel like I need a shorter rod than the one I have.

Haven’t fished in what seems like forever since the weather has been so shitty and some friends have gotten married so weekends have been booked. A buddy and I are supposed to fish a Redfish/Snook/Trout tournament on Saturday but forecast right now has it 20-25 knots with gusts to 30. Impossible to sight fish in that shit. Hoping they reschedule or the wind lays down.
Last time I did get out though, we wen't snapper fishing and crushed the yellowtails. Smallest one was 18” with the rest between 20-23”. One of my favorites to eat, especially at that size.

Was just at the tackle shop picking out a new rod for a reel I’ve had sitting. Between that and the warm temps I’m ready for them striped bass to make their way up the coast. Another couple weeks and it should be on in my parts.

Supposed to get it next week though so I’m stoked. What kinda set up do you use for striper fishing? I assume you fish them from the surf?

What rod are you pairing with the curado. I don’t do much open beach surf fishing but I do do some in back bay type casting from shore but I primarily kayak fish and boats. I use various setups for stripers depending on the scenario. This particular rod/reel combo I’m looking to get will be for deep water jigging.

Perfect for short and quick casts at redfish and snook. I’ve always wanted to see what the NE striper/bluefish/Albie fishing is like. My wife’s from NJ and we go up a few times a year but none of our friends up there really fish and I never really have time to try and book a guide. The stripers especially seem like a good time. Would love to fish one of those blitzing school with a fly rod one day.

Fished a tournament today with my buddy out of the Everglades. Weather was absolutely terrible with 20-25 knots winds all day gusting to 30. Finished 5th out of 30 boats with a 17” trout and 20” snook. Spent most of the day looking for a redfish (results were based on your longest of each one) but couldn’t find one to save our lives. All we needed was a 21” redfish and we’d have finished 3rd. We did catch a baby tarpon as a consolation prize which was cool. They’re gonna do this tournament again in the summer so I’m pumped to do it again (and with much better weather).
