If you don’t have some creative need for a Mac, there’s no reason to go Mac. I say this as a total Mac guy (I have four).

Buying a good laptop as a student is stressful as Hell. How much are you looking to drop? Any other requirements outside of memory?
I bought an Asus Zenbook Flip about 2 years ago that is still working well outside of some weird trackpad issues that started after a year (8GB memory, which is typical for laptops in the $700 range). I have no issues with it really, although it doesn't cut it for some scientific computing that I do for school, but that probably isn't relevant to what you need.

If you need something for school, just get an Asus anything. They're affordable and reliable. I have three computers from them, including a laptop from 2010 that is still kicking. No need to get a Mac unless you're doing stuff with video editing or graphic design.

If I could go back in time, I would have purchased a nice Chromebook.
everything is stored in the cloud and the boot times for programs is almost immediate since it's all flash stored.
unless you wen't with the pixel book, youd save a ton of money on a 3P model. Samsung sold a realy nice one at some point.

I’ve had my MacBook for a few years and while I like it, I really dislike the shallow keys. They might not be the most fun to use when writing a lot.

I think I'm leaning towards a macbook. Apparently they offer student discounts? Is this real? they do. another option if your leaning towards mac is certified refurbished off their site. possibly check out your schools bookstore and see if they sell them at a discount as well.

Does anyone have anything to say about Microsoft’s surface? They seem cool but I just don’t know anything about their performance and reliability.. I’ve had my chrome book since 2012 and I find this thing to be great for basic needs. It’s a workhorse and is still as quick as when I bought it.

I got my Macbook certified refurbished from apple and it was definitely the way to go. I saved like $3-400 I think (but it was still really expensive compared to other laptops. I'm not sure if it's because it has a solid state drive vs a hard disc drive, but it is so much faster and has help up way longer than every other laptop I've owned. Previously my laptops would start slowing down after about 2 years, and then become really slow and nearly unusable after 4. I've had this one about 4 years I think and it's still as quick as when I bought it. Like I said, that could be due to the fact that my old laptop had hard disc drives which tend to wear out and slow down over time, or maybe it's just that apple makes longer lasting products.

If you're wanting to keep it below a grand I wouldn't recommend going with apple, and I typed that on a macbook. There are plenty of good options that will save you hundreds of dollars. EDIT: I've never used it, but apple's refurbished program is pretty well known for doing a very good job, so you don't "notice" you're getting something used.

Buying a good laptop as a student is stressful as Hell. How much are you looking to drop? Any other requirements outside of memory? I'd like to stay under a grand ideally. I'm in a degree program that will be longer than most students since I'm also working full time, and I'll be doing a ton of writing and research. Outside school stuff, I'm not into gaming or design but I'd like to try to learn photoshop for my satanic temple event coordination (creating flyers and editing photos) I'm inclined to agree with the other posters who suggested an Asus, good quality for the money. As per Heathenist's post, also go for something with an SSD rather than a HDD--makes a noticeable difference in terms of speed and reliability. If you can get a refurbished Macbook for around the same price, that would work great too. I prefer to store everything on my computer and back it up to an external SSD every few days, so I stay away from stuff that relies on cloud storage.

Yo I need a new computer too. Something that can run FL Studio without freezing and Photoshop. Maybe some light video editing. Help me out my computers are trash. Maybe a desktop but if laptops are better now than they were ten years ago that might be aight.

I didn't see that it was used. Usually, Lenovo or Huawei is the way to go.

My advice is to buy a slow one so you can catch it easier.

if you have or know someone who has a amazon prime o-count, i'd keep an eye on amazon tomorrow fro Prime Day. they've had some really good tech deals leading up to it and wouldn't be surprised if there are a couple of good deals on laptops.
otherwise i'm with the people who suggested ASUS or Lenovo. I've had good experiences with mine and the last one i bough cost 340 and can be used as a tablet or a laptop. I've heard Microsoft surface's are really nice but fairly pricey. there is a sub $400 model coming out sometime in the near future though.

You're looking for something to write, read pdfs and watch porn on, yes?
The heart wants what the heart wants, but there's no reason to pay extra for a mac. You're not going to need the processing power and probably not going to being messing with the OS any more than setting readers and zip/rar preferences.
I dropped a grip on a lenovo gaming laptop that still a joy and a painless beast, I can't speak for the entry level stuff but my next laptop search will definitely start them. I also have the asus version of the microsoft surface, which I settled on after cross referencing reviews. It seems like all their <$1000 stuff is well built for the price.

Sometimes it can be worth checking out refurbished models if you're trying to save some money.
