ugh i really want a zojirushi
i'm great at cooking rice in a regular-ass pot - i've had friends/roommates get fake-mad at me for how often i inexplicably nail it - but the zoji is just so fuggin cool
for those of you who own them: what model did y'all get? gonna do some research and put one on a wishlist.
the other half used to work for various chef stores so she can probably get a killer deal on one via friends
it's time

I have the Neuro Fuzzy 10 cup rice cooker and I use the fuck out of it. I eat a lot of fried rice so I’m putting it to good use. I started using my Zorijushi bread maker too because I’ve been on an avocado and toast kick lately. I only got the 10 cup one because it was on sale and that was the only rice cooker available but I would have gone for a smaller one. This one is pretty big and I don’t have much counter space so I have it on my baker’s rack.

patdog should I go for a silicone cutting board or stick to wood? I cook meat every other day, usually tacos or fried rice, so I chop up a lot of chicken and beef.

just go to a kitchen supply joint and buy one or two of those giant generic NSF white Polyethylene jobs. Sam's club has them for like 8 bucks.

Patdog, what should I make for mai waife’s birthday dinner? Hmmm… I’d say go for a showpiece kinda thing. A nice hearty but balanced braise of some kind. Something that shows you put love, commitment and dedication into it (much like your marriage itself). I’d recommend osso bucco personally, it’s def the season for it ;)

Patdog, let’s say I buy discount meat that is “use by” in 2 days. If I cook it that day, does it “rest the clock” so to speak? Are leftovers now good for 3-4 days or just 2 days? My wife thinks the cooking process resets it, but I don’t! Settle this for us

The question isn’t about the validity of use by/sell by dates, it’s if the cooking process resets the clock or not on expiring food

i bought chicken breast at costco and left it in my fridge for 4 days before i bothered to freeze any of it. google told me it's probably not good anymore but i still made cutlets and only had minor shitsies. does this mean my chicken was bad?

Your wife is right, and labels are bullshit Wife is right however it doesn’t hurt to proceed with caution. If you had minor shitsies this time round in a couple days it’ll prolly be exacerbated. I’d say cut yer losses

You're worrying about expiration dates and tangy leftovers, you clearly couldn't handle Ruth.

Should be, specially if the freezer remained shut… have you checked em out? If they’ve defrosted you can just refreeze em (the whole “refreezing alters the taste” thing is a myth, just don’t do it in a restaurant). That said if they’re defrosted and smell kinda funky don’t take any chances. Because of how mass-produced chicken is (and frankly mistreated) it’s definitely on the sketchier side of meats. If shits still frozen tho you’re golden, just put em back in the freezer

I've driven across country with a cooler full of half frozen birds - 10 hours in an unopened freezer with other frozen mass in there it's better than your average fridge conditions.

I ended up with some very nice looking wagyu bavette which I’m pan searing with chimichurri, duck fat roasted potatoes, and an arugula salad with orange blossom honey goat cheese, mandarins, and toasted almonds. Can’t wait to do that osso bucco next time.
