Hey PB I have an R56 Mini Cooper, 136k miles with maintenance done regularly. I just noticed soot on the inside of my hood and my turbo looks grimey. I have not noticed any visible smoke but I have smelled either fuel or burnt oil inside the cabin during cold starts. Do you think this might be an exhaust leak or is my turbo leaking oil?

I'm sorry to hear about your Mini ownership, my condolences An exhaust leak in the engine bay would generally be making quite a lot of noise. I would have a mechanic look at that turbo

The engineers of this car were high as a kite when they desighned this engine.

So my low tire light came on so I wen't and put air in my tires and used the gauge or whatever and looked up the correct PSI. Finish doin it and guess what, now both the low tire light is on and now somehow my check engine light is back on LMAO I know it’s just a coincidence but I became full of rage lol is the tire light flashing when you start the car? No it just turns on and the stays on 🥲

is the tire light flashing when you start the car? No it just turns on and the stays on 🥲 well, that is odd if you inflated to the proper PSI (should also be printed on a sticker somewhere in your driver's doorjamb if you need to know in a pinch, that's general info for everybody) you probably have a dead sensor, but usually the car signifies that by flashing the tire light a few times when you first start the car, before it stays on solid

Yo Mr. Cookies: what weird euro car brand should I buy or avoid? What a question! Off the top of my head, the European car that is most "reliable" and engineered in the way that "makes the most sense" (I am grinding my teeth as I write this) is probably Volvo. Earnest question: is it hard to get a Honda or Toyota in Germany? They were all pals at one point at least (WWII humor) I, unfortunately am unable to afford a Volvo. We're looking for just a steady once a week type car and maybe some longer trips once or twice a year. No, Hondas and Toyota are pretty common here.

Well assuming things are comparable to here, a nice Honder or Toyoter will serve you well for many years without complaint and will have very good resale value when it's time to move on. If you're more into some weird freak car like a Skoda or something, do what your heart tells you and I will do my best to help. Also there may be French cars available there that I don't know anything about!

I'm also thinking there may be some economy of scale thing happening there, where the repair bills for a German car would not be as outlandish as they are here.
They are still desighned in way I can only describe as "engineering sadism" though

Pbcookies, what is the most racist-looking truck? I believe it is the Dodge Ram, particularly the late-1990s and 2000s model years.

The tire light in my wife's Civic has been on since the last service around Xmas. Not planning on looking into it, the car is simply wrong.

I'll have a look at the Toyota dealerships and see whats up. Where would we be without you, Mr Cookies?

They are still desighned in way I can only describe as "engineering sadism" though VWs are widely expensive here compared to other European markets, not sure why. There is an off chance we'd be getting a deal on a used golf from a family friend. They seem to last a while?

In my (anecdotal, but significant) experience, VWs (smaller ones in particular) are better than most of the other German cars (BMW and Audi especially), but still not even in the same universe of reliability, repairability, and cost-effectiveness of even an average-tier Japanese car, e.g. Subaru. Depends on how good of a deal it is, I guess! Update the thread as you search!

Why does my early mid 2000s Nissan Sentra take multiple attempts to start sometimes and other times it starts right up? It’s never not eventually started up and it seems to have no other real issues. Help me out pbcookies.

Also maybe check out Mazda if they're available and serviceable there. A little less staid than your typical Honder or Toyoter.
May have mentioned this at some point, but my shop has a CX-7 loaner car that just rolled over 375,000 miles. We haven't done much besides change the oil and do brake jobs and tires every now and then.

Will do. We've been looking at used because we don't know if we'll be moving sooner rather than later, and luckily prices are finally going down. They were stupid high here over the past few years, though from what I've read it's been similar in the US.

If you can see the starter from under the car, or from under the hood (not super likely) you can tap on it with a hammer while someone turns the key. If that helps, it's definitely the starter.
Or if you're not a greaseball like me that rolls around on the ground tapping on starters with hammers, you can take it to your favorite mechanic

On the topic of longevity. My first car was an '83 Volvo station wagen that my parents bought in Sweden while they were stationed here. I got my license in 2005 and that thing drove for 550k miles. My mom kept it and is considering rebuilding the engine and getting it going again. She was a God damn tank.

Have had to condemn a few 80s Volvos for no reason other than rust. Still running just fine as they completely disintegrate

Just massive sun spots and deteriorating insides. It made me love back pop up seats that face backwards. As a kid, nothing better than driving and waving at all of the other cars face to face.
