dear mr cookies,
my wife has a 2014 honda civic. she had the rear brakes, rotors, and calipers replaced last week. today she was driving and the low brake fluid light came on, then the low power steering fluid light, then finally the VSA and e brake lights.
did the jokers at the shop disconnect some lines and forget to reconnect them or puncture a reservoir or something? can I just refill the brake fluid to get it to a shop or should I have it towed? also, am I obligated to square up on the mechanic? idk how this works!
all the best, cody definitely not from nyc

I would try and crawl under the rear of the car with a flashlight. Assuming you know where the brake caliper is, there is a flexible hose going into the (usually) back of the caliper. I would look at both sides for wetness (brake fluid). Did your wife notice a weak-feeling brake pedal? Soft, spongy, etc? Depending on how much fluid is leaking, you may want to tow it. Or better yet, call the shop and have them pay for the tow. From what I'm hearing it sounds like their fuck-up. But please check and report back. Regards, pb

and yes, please check your brake fluid reservoir (under the hood) to see if the level is at the "MAX" line (where it should be after having brake work done)

(yes i am finally being forced to give up on the 03 honda (greatest car ever made)) Ms Albany, I don't really, but my anecdotal/limited impression of Nissans of that period is that they constantly have sensor circuit codes and other types of OBD failures that are not a big deal but can get pricey. Usually when I see a Nissan it's either for an O2 sensor or some related problem, or something else and there is a blaring Check Engine light on either related to the problem they brought it in for, or not. Not sure how this lines up with other techs' experience, but that's mine

Is the shop far from home? In either case, fill the brake reservoir all the way up with DOT3 brake fluid before you leave. If it's far, you might consider making them tow it. Safety first, of course. If the system runs out of fluid it will affect all the brakes, not just the one where the leak is.

I second Mr Cookies’ remarks on the CVT. A Nissan dealership manager acquaintance of mine told me to steer clear of Nissans on o-count of their crap ass transmissions. But I’ve also heard that Honda and Subaru CVTs are made by the same manufacturer, so I don’t know. Maybe that’s not true.

I work on cars that are past their warranties, so ~3-5 years old at least. Usually 5-10 years old on average.
I would not buy any car with a CVT in that year range. Maybe the newest ones (made in the last 3-5 years) are better, I have no idea.

that is disapointing as it seems most every car i can afford locally that has less than 200k miles on it also has a CVT.

engine problems, though

it's a shame because not only have i already fallen in love with this car but i've been driving someone else's nissan with a CVT for a month now and thought it was quite enjoyable.
maybe i'll go look at this 2008 chrysler 300 instead.

(accord) the biggest of many problems being that the timing chain is stretched (likely broken) so the cam and crank are out of phase and the car doesn't run. it also needs a catalytic converter and a new steering pump to pass inspection.

this is obviously a problem caused by a lack of oil. the car was never maintained properly while my grandmother owned it prior and i'm absentminded and could never get used to the amount of oil the car consumed (had to add a quart roughly every 500 miles).
check your oil frequently kids!

i was actually specifically looking for 00's buicks but it appears that i would have to travel out of state to purchase one. post 2010 ones are mostly out of my price range. pretty strictly trying to stay under $10k which is proving to be difficult.
