This isn't 2006. The average person already is terminally online, it doesn't matter that they spend all day on Tiktok watching Temu hauls instead of reading political ragebait on Twitter. I wouldn't pretend that someone isn't terminally drunk because they got there with beer instead of spirits.
We live in a world where spending on marketing outpaces spending on public education more than fiftyfold and you will see hundreds of ads every single day you wake up, most of them personalized out of information that was taken from you without your informed consent. You are just going to crash and burn if you don't practice some level of asceticism, which is unfortunately necessary because capitalism sees this as an issue of personal responsibility and seemingly no one understands what is happening and no one else besides religious or culture war grifters seem to even openly care.
It seems to me that the two loudest voices in the room on this topic online are usually some flavor of religious or cultural conservative zealot or some useless left leaning person with a bizarrely boomerish hippie perspective on this topic, as if there's not anything more ideologically boomer than believing "everything will be fine because it was fine for me." Most people over 30 cannot even conceptualize growing up in a world where they are not permitted to go outside without spending money and every internet space is now primarily sponsored content. And the main refuges from that are like, all consumption-based interests instead of productive ones; playing video games all day versus playing the guitar. It is so bad and if you think it is coincidence that all the major countries in Europe are voting in far right governments wait until you live in a culturally conservative world when you're old because you chose to ignore this today.
Leave it to a punk for half of their friends to be dead by 40 and to always chalk it down to tragedy or unfortunate accidents.
