Sucks that since Straight To Hell he has put out a lot of bad music. Agreed. Straight To Hell is classic though.

Gillian has become more of a "singer-songwriter" (I hate that term), but damn can she play straight country when she feels like it:

corny country is good in its time and place usually at a dive bar 6+ beers deep.

Fave Alt-Country by far is Lambchop. I think Kurt Wagner is one of the greatest songwriters ever. Lambchop - Songs From the Wishing You Well direct download: bg.firstpress.net/Lambchop%20-%20Songs%20From%20the%20Wishing%20You%20Well.zip

Been enjoying the new Ryan Bingham today, good mix of upbeat jams and slow ones.

time (the revelator) is suuuuuch a good album. i dream a highway's an all-time track i've never really dipped into her catalog beyond that. what's her most country leaning outing? She has always drawn from a lot of different wells, and even her straightforward country songs are pulled from very distinct eras (early Carter Family style, 60s Cash style, Patsy Cline/Lefty Frizzell honky tonk, etc). For the most part they're scattered around in her LPs, or live recordings. But I'd say her first record Revival is in general her most straightforward. That song I posted earlier, "Dry Town", is from a collection of unreleased early material that is really really excellent and contains a lot of traditional country tunes. It might actually be my favorite Gilliam album, despite not exactly being an album. I've listened to it the most at least. All of her material is incredible and you can't really go wrong. I wish there was a studio version of this one: She does a lot of versions of songs just casually off-the-cuff in live settings that are absolutely mindblowing. I could talk about Gillian all day.

I picked this out of a dollar bin recently. I hadn't heard Charley's version before, thanks for posting. I think everyone has their own favorite, for me this is the one: But Charley Pride gives George and Tammy a run for their money
