Great episode. The show's entire premise is grounded on what happens after Logan Roy dies. There was always that inevitability, but despite the multiple health scares and foreshadowing during the series, Logan's death -- on a plane toilet -- still came as a shock, to his children and the viewers.
Fantastic acting by Shiv, Roman, and Kendall. They really captured the emotional chaos that wracks an individual during an untimely death.

Some thoughts Having been on the receiving end of phone calls like the one they received, I feel like the show was able to capture the reality of that situation, which is the initial shock, followed by the attempt to gather as much information as you can to sort of distract yourself from the reality of that news.
The chaotic nature of it felt very real, and each of their reactions felt very true to character. Roman not willing to accept it and arguing with them about what they know or don't know, Kendall trying to coordinate with doctors on the ground and set up a conference call, Shiv feeling left out or like they didn't tell her soon enough. But the thing I liked is that the moments where it could have devolved into argument, they were quickly met with empathy. Frank on the plane knowing that Kendall's unrealistic demand to speak to the pilot was coming from the shock he was experiencing, and Kendall realizing it was pointless; Shiv calling Roman delusional but then relenting when she empathizes with how he is processing the pain; Shiv being snippy with Tom only to immediately apologize. It was all played so well.
The pilot episode had a Logan health scare so it's kind of wild to see this inevitability play out finally and how they all react despite everything he has put them through. Also loved Kendall saying he can't forgive him but that he loves him. That's the weird thing about familial love. You love them even if they don't really deserve it.

Also I thought one of the most poignant lines was when Kendall said "what we do next will always be what we did on the day our father died" which is just such a tough reality because of who Logan was. They are having a very human moment, but can't even have five minutes to process the information, because Logan's death means something completely different to the rest of the world. Also, Roman looking at the stock price and going "That was dad" was rough, because he said it like looking at a family photo. Their dad was a company, a stock price. He wasn't theirs.

Have had similar experiences with being on the other end of the line finding about an unexpected death and they really nailed the confusion and various stages of grief that happen in those situations.
I usually never watch the post-credit "Inside the Episode" things but I did for this, and I guess they ran that whole sequence essentially as a one act play having to reload the film in the cameras on the fly. I'll be interested to go back and watch that whole scene again.

There's a Starz series called High Town that is so trashy and fun. Season 3 has been delayed so long but man it rules. All about drug trafficking in Cape Cod. Wife and I love this show; it has a ridiculous amount of sex in it that makes us laugh.

Also Monica Raymund is so damn beautiful. Just realized you're the only other Royals fan, have seen this and Lodge 49. Made it to my cool poster list.

Succession was great. Logan Roy dying on an airplane toilet is funny as fuck and couldn't happen to a better guy. Can't wait to watch the crows pick away at the corpse.

one more thought: My favorite part of this episdoe is that Logan's death had meant different things to different people and the show did a great job showing the range of emotions and reactions. Kendall, Roman, Shiv, Connor losing a father but someone who's affection and approval they all craved so much (the kids talking on the phone telling they love him but also calling him a monster, telling him to fuck off etc.) Tom, Greg and Carrie losing their protector and benefactor and very much in the outside looking in. Then there's Karl and the gang who seem to be sad, but also have a "the king is dead, long live the king" attitude and making moves with Logan's corpse in the next room.
KBD saying that Logan was the company is a great point. Because it also shows how utterly alone he was, which makes the first ep of the season hit harder when he we telling his driver/body guard that he's the only friend that he has. Yeah man, great fucking episode.

I genuinely thought Logan was playing dead to fuck with the kids before the big meeting with GoJo. When that didn't seem the case, my next thought was he had some kind of heart attack while banging Kerry in the bathroom.

Beef was fantastic really want them to end it here but theres talks of a second season. Let stories run their natural course for fuck sake. Netflix shows just arent this good typically and im still kinda blown away they managed to pull this off. Really clever writing, great performances all around, particularly Yeun and Wong.

I'm sure it'll be good but nothing will touch season 1. Curious as to what type of touches they'll keep or ignore since it's the first season without the creator involved.

Season 3 was really good, but man, season 1 was lightning in a bottle. It can never be replicated.

I still think about Season 1 all the time. What was the black hole Rust saw? What do the spirals mean? Was that even the Yellow King?

s3 was good besides the last 10 minutes. that sucked.
s1 is perfect. cary fukunaga directing all the episodes. adam arkapaw as DP is the most underrated aspect of the show (he was the architect of the projects scene). macca on that psycho run that included mud, dallas buyers club. woody turning in the best performance of his career. michelle monaghan as the best female lead. nic plagiarizing the right book.

I could see it working as an anthology series if each season was a different set of characters. But really, they should leave it at one season and not milk it.
