I feel like season 2 will achieve some cult status at some point. I think its OK. I hated how Vince Vaughns character talked in riddles the entire time. It has its flaws for sure, but I'm a sucker for a classic noire, and I think Season 2 fits that bill better than the other seasons.

One of the most underrated aspects of Barry is when NoHo Hank gets serious. Like it adds so much more gravity. Anthony Carrigan being able to turn that sentiment so well is so impressive.

Probably a hot take, but I enjoyed all 3 seasons of True Detective. If season 2 or 3 hadn't been under the True Detective name, everyone would be obsessed with those as much as they are with season 1. I totally disagree with this. I think we're quick to forget how special season 1 felt when it first came out, and I can watch it and enjoy it almost as much still today.
Season 2 is fine by normal television standards in a vacuum, but there is also some bad writing and a bunch of pretty goofy scenes that the first and third season didn't suffer from.
I'm more inclined to agree with you on season 3, if it had a different name I would have gone in with lower expectations, but I did still enjoy it.
If I was gonna rate them each with the same objective 1-10 scale I'd go:
Season 1: 10
Season 2: 5
Season 3: 7

Party Down's new season has been terrific. Hopefully they do more seasons every few years like Curb or Sunny.

I agree with everything you just said. Expectations are fairly tempered for season four. They caught lightning in a bottle with the first season and apparently lightning doesn't strike twice. My nightmare is they do another Rust and Marty story somewhere down the road.

I donβt think anyone involved has any desire to do that. HBO BEGGED Nic to make S2 a continuation of the Rust / Marty story and he flatly refused.

I think I do remember that. I'm pretty sure McConaughey said he'd love to play the character again but he didn't know if there was interest from the writers.

Iβm just super curious in reading about that, because I know they announced it early on that it was an anthology series.
HBO must have heard about his vision for S2 being about βthe secret occult history of the US transit systemβ and begged for Woody and MM back. π

Nah theyβre just awful about that. They did the same thing to Richard Price / Steve Zillian about The Night Of and they laughed at them saying thereβs no more story to be told. They did it with Big Little Lies and actually got a pointless and awful second season. Network executives are monsters.

Everybody was so hyped based on that description. It's like NP was the only person who didn't understand what distinguished S1 from every other detective show.
It makes me respect Fargo that much more. They did three seasons that were totally different but all great.

S5 looking good too, but in their defense, it's the same showrunner every season, guy's a genius.

I feel like I remember reading around the time season 2 came out that there's a version of that story that is completely different, and that HBO execs pushed him to rewrite so that it wouldnt be so similar to season 1.

I'm interested in hearing what Barry Jenkins involvement in True Detective entailed exactly. Dudes last project was one of the best things of the year, so excited to see if this can live up to the hype.

Fuckin Barry, man. I think this episode was the most I've laughed at an episode since S2.
