The fact Immolation had five years ('91-'96) between the release of Dawn of Possession and Here in After is also a huge factor in their overall success as a band. They missed the early 90s peak popularity of death metal, by 1996 the genre's popularity was waning.

Sad, because the run from Here in After through Unholy Cult is all classics (and at worst, everything that's followed falls into the "pretty fucking good" category [EDIT: Kingdom of Conspiracy was actually pretty whatever]). Definitely top 5 DM band for me.

Dawn of Possession is one of the best death metal records ever, Immolation rules.

Immolation fanboy here, band fucking rules. Close to a World Below is an easy top 5 DM album for me. So heavy, sounds like a legit trip to hell.

Also my favorite. Such a huge step up in production, which was something I had never really considered before that. I was a bit over Metal in general at that point and that record definitely brought me back. Saw them on my birthday for that tour and it fucking ruled.
Roadrunner dropping them could've been a blessing in disguise (imagine Here in After with Breeding the Spawn's garbage production).
