THE LOOSER THE WAISTBAND THE DEEPER THE QUICKSAND OR SO I HAVE READ... My favorite thing about this song is that they are all playing bass guitars (including a double bass).

Anyone ever seen “Wise Blood”? Randomly threw it on and it’s pretty good so far. I thought the main guy looked familiar. Turned out he’s the same guy who played the Gemini Killer in “Exorcist III” and Gimli in LOTR.

Wise Blood is good, John Huston usually never does wrong.

Honestly Bullit or The French Connection would be absolutely awesome on big screens for their respective chases. Oh hell yeah. The Seven Ups has a great chase scene too. They kinda modeled that whole movie after The French Connection. Even had Roy Scheider. Speaking of Scheider, Sorceror would be amazing on the big screen.

Just finished Da 5 Bloods.
I have trouble with newer Spike Lee. I can usually appreciate the rough idea of what he's doing, but his symbolism and references have gotten so on-the-nose and shoehorned-in feeling to me. I felt the same way about Blackkklansman.
Not trying to be contrary. I think Bamboozled is one of the sharpest satires of all time and Do The Right thing is obviously one of the greatest and most vital films ever made period. The tone in those films was managed so obsessively though, and the tone of his more contemporary stuff is so all over the map and confusing.

Da 5 Bloods was pretty good, but it's also pretty messy. His ambitions exceed farther than he can grasp.
Shirley rocked. This is the new film from Josephine Decker, who directed Madeline's Madeline. It just got added to Hulu. Elisabeth Moss is great in this.

It just got added to Hulu. Elisabeth Moss is great in this. I think one of the problems for me was that... ...you can have a fairly frank examination of Vietnam through the lens of people of color fighting other people of color (this is what I wanted the movie to be, personally), or you can have an action-packed, heavily plotted, Sierra Madre/Simple Plan type group conspiracy story. Trying to make it both made the didactic aspects seem really tacked-on to me.
I once read somewhere that while filming Spaceballs, Mel Brooks became enthralled with the special effects he had at his disposal through working with ILM, despite not having previously had any interest and it not really mattering that much to the film. The gun battle scenes in Da 5 Bloods reminded me of that and felt like someone having access to something for the first time.

Yeah, The Killing has been on my list for awhiiille. I also def need to get on that. I watched a bentenn flick last night, EYEWITNESS (1981). It's essentially a whodunnit thriller set in sleezy early 80s Big Apple and chock full of now legendary performers (this cast is stacked). It's clearly an homage to Hitchcock thrillers such as Notorious or North By Northwest and occasionally borderlines on the absurd but all around a fun flick and worth a viewing just for the setting and all those fresh young faces (I'm looking at you, Sigourney). HAHAHA.

Jackie Chan's POLICE STORY, damn, how did I sleep on this? Having seen The Raid movies/The Night Comes For Us/etc it's wild to see how much of that hyper-violent, quick-twitch style came from this movie. Absolutely awesome. Awesome movie. not sure if you've seen POLICE STORY 3, aka SUPERCOP, but it also rules. Michelle Yeoh jumps a dirt bike onto a moving train. It rules. I have not seen Police Story 2 tho, ha

Triple posting, damn. i was away for like a day and the thread moved thru 3 pages.
- Scream, Queen! My Nightmare on Elm Street -
good casual watch. Interesting part where Mark Patton calls out the screenwriter of NOES 2 to admit that he wrote a queer movie with a gay character. Which, he never has, and has always claimed he didnt but just that Patton made it that way.
- Across 110th Street -
More of a drama and procedural than blaxploitation, even though it has elements. The 70s drama works more than it doesn’t, with Kotto doing some nice work with several scenes where his bottled up anger comes to the surface but never explodes. And Paul Benjamin (who’s performance in 1997’s HOODLUM as a gangster named “Whispers” I adore) gets a quality role that opens the film in a tense and fierce hold up of the mob. Good watch that sometimes gets a little dull and focuses on the wrong characters more than it should, but the opening, good actors galore, and finale that involves a Harlem rooftop chase/shootout makes for a quality watch in the end.
- Nashville Girl -
A title you won't see pop up in most places when looking for movies about country music. There's a few reasons for that. And they're all understandable. The goings on of this film are that of the worst the exploitation subgenre has to offer, and it happens throughout. The worst part is, is that whats happening onscreen in a movie is more than likely a real story of countless other women in Nashville or any showbiz town. Thats the slimeball part of the film.
The other aspect is the brave and raw performance of Monica Gayle to really transform this film into something more. What starts out as hicksploitation morphs into something better - something mainstream Hollywood would become obsessed with in the next few years and into the next decade. The movie really dives into the song and performance rhythms, and when its there, its nice. When its there, it feels like a completely different and better movie.
- Sweetheart (2019) -
Decent beach survival horror thriller monster movie mishmash. Gets a little bit Life of Pi'ey in one specific way.

I love the way the opening scene builds perfectly with the music up to the crescendo/shootout. Masterful shit. The rest of the movie can't hold that momentum unfortunately, but it's still a fave of mine probably for nostalgic reasons. Bobby Womack knocked it out of the park with the theme song.

I have never watched a single Judd Apatow movie twice and even Knocked Up and 40 Y/O Virgin I don't really think are all that funny even when not accounting for being half an hour too long.
