Underrated movie *salute emoji* Rewatched 'Blue Velvet' last night. I wonder if in 1986 people thought Lynch was going to be an eccentric De Palma. Lots in common with 'Body Double' (as both could be interpreted as Hitchcock influenced.) I think if 'Blue Velvet' was shot in b&w it would be more obvious that it is basically a fifties movie shot in the eighties. E3 is one of my favorite horror movies and one of my favorite movies in general. Criminally slept on. I thought the opening of Blue Velvet set that up pretty well but that movie is still pretty contentious.

My favorite subgenre for horror will always be occult/satanic stuff. So any sort of supernatural element is totally fine by me if it’s done well. Like dad in Hereditary bursting into flames. And, tbh, that angle is what has me hyped most for this.

And, tbh, that angle is what has me hyped most for this. You'll love it. It just felt off or something? Felt rushed to close it out. I could've watched another half hour or even hour of it. I don't know. I'm gonna go see it again when it won't be as busy. I noticed some little things playing detective as it played out and there is some good attention to detail. Won't say anymore but am glad movies like this exist and get a sold out crowd. Go watch Exorcist 3 ASAP if that's your vibe.

I agree that Longlegs was good not great. A bit disappointed considering it was getting comparisons to Silence of the Lambs which is one of my all-time faves. The first 15-20 mins I thought was amazing but I was really not digging the 3rd act. What was with that clunky exposition dump near the end? At times I couldn't tell it if was going for a black comedy route or if it was trying to be serious and coming off as goofy.
Really like Nic Cage in this though! Completely demented performance.

Currently watching Wong Kar-wai‘s The Hand. Absolutely no one shoots a woman in a dress like he does.

but I was really not digging the 3rd act. Yup.
The first two acts were the 2nd best season of True Detective though.
Between this and Pig, I think Nic Cage has revealed the nature of typical Oregonians.

Bought tickets for Longlegs next Tuesday. Going Monday with my bestie. She can't stop talking about it and I've spent the last few months trying to avoid any spoilers since I like going into every movie with as little info on the plot as possible.

Very seldom am I disappointed by a film with no/low expectations! I'm a giant manbaby but I will literally close my eyes and cover my ears if a trailer for a film I want to see comes up in the theater. I've been doing the "go in blind" thing for the better part of a decade and it makes movies more interesting and also lowers my expectations for them. The VVitch was the movie that made me stop looking at trailers and listening to hype. I was so disappointed because I expected something totally different than a moody period piece and I love that movie so much more now upon further viewing.

Yeah I tend to avoid any trailer past a 30 second teaser and anything I read about movies I assume the person is partially hard-rocking and/or takes every movie so serious that it ruins almost every movie for themselves.

Never ever defame the great Burlington, MA Mall ever again. Also I think duck butter called it Pall Mall Blart Cop and that's forever how I read it.

Longlegs really captures how gloomy and horrible the Pacific Northwest is in February. Thought it was great. I always have my movie brain on, so not a single development surprised me. I think if you view it through a surreal or dreamy lens, the performances make a bit more sense, same with his other movies. None of the main performances come off as particularly real or understated, but that’s intentional. Hope you like windows and doors, cuz they’re in like every shot.

I enjoyed a lot of those wide shots showing homes and neighborhoods entirely empty without any cars or people. Perkins knows how to utilize all the tricks and I enjoy that on a cinematic level. My dumb movie detective brain always paid attention to the clock and hit me immediately as a center shot. I still think it's an above average procedural and weak supernatural horror flick that asks more questions than anything it delivers. Lots of working parts. My biggest gripe nowadays is that you have to have a certain score or shot that means "THIS IS GOOD". Every sci-fi flick now needs looooong droning synth blasting in your ears during transition scenes. Abrupt silence to build tension for a jump scare in horror. It's a weird film and I'm happy it was made with studio support.

Maika Monroe is probably the preeminent modern scream queen. It Follows, Significant Other, Watcher, Longlegs. I think she (or her team) made a play for A list headliner it girl and that dream died with Independence Day 2. She has a pretty solid body of work and she’s still pretty young.
Edit: Villains and The Guest, too. Damn, she’s had a run.

I'll defend her forever as an actress who can dictate emotions through physical expression. Not sure if her agent just filters horror stuff to her or she chooses it but she is phenomenal. Go watch After Everything or Hot Summer Nights for her dramatic work.
