Have you all heard of this Barack Obama guy? I don’t like him. What kind of name is Barack anyway? That's suspicious if you ask me! It could be short for something like Barack Olli W/ Cheese Sauce

My local Member of the European Parliament lost his seat too, despite me voting for him. Only one cool MEP kept their seat, which is a shame but we ball on.

Also the situation in France is insane.
The traditional conservative party split over supporting the fascist RN, with two different factions of the party controlling different social media channels. The pro-fascist side is controlled by the party president who locked himself into the party HQ to tweet that he was still president and everyone should support him, while the non-fascist side expelled him and claimed to be the legitimate leaders of the party.
Gaullism, the clown show that never stops honking.

Saudi Arabia ending the US petrodollar deal seems like it should be a bigger deal but I dont see much reporting on it.

In addition to Wyoming, Alaska and West Virginia are basically resource curse states inside the US.
Ending the petrodollar might lead to a devaluation in the dollar, which would be good for domestic exporting industries. Sucks for anyone relying on imports but that probably incentivizes investment in domestic supply chains. It’s not a bad thing unless you’re one of those psychos that likes a strong dollar.

He also has claimed multiple times to have seen videos of 10/7 atrocities that even Israel says didn’t happen.

We already have Joe Biden and he’s doing great in that regard nah he's just senile Don't make me get started on this one, I already had to school my dad on father's day. My man Joe has given Amtrak more funding than any president of the last four decades at least. Amtrak no longer has to live hand to mouth. Amtrak has more capital projects than they have staff to pull off. Private sector investment in rail is soaring. And let's not forget the Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements (CRISI) program! Say it with me board: "Choo choo!"

Choo choo! In how many places tho? Last I checked, the only high speed rail is the northeast corridor, and only a handful of trains per day. We need cross country high speed rail, not just one line from dc to Boston.

I mean, personally I don't see HSR as something that should be a serious priority in the U.S. right now over cheaper more effective projects like bus rapid transit in cities and strategies for improving service and building ridership on existing lines. Obviously, east coast corridors make the most sense, not least because there's better public support and less legal obstacles. But, Brightline West should hit 200mph when/if it opens in 2028 and Brightline in Florida hits 120 currently. It's going to take longer to build high speed rail in the U.S. than elsewhere because we haven't done it before and do not have the workforce to do it, we have umpteen million jurisdictional hurdles, etc. There's some positive developments as far as workforce development and shit like that: www.masstransitmag.com/rail/press-release/55089169/us-high-speed-rail-association-us-high-speed-rail-coalition-unveils-roadmap-with-guidance-on-how-to-launch-high-speed-rail-project

While we're talking rail infrastructure, let me just take a second to bemoan the state of Irish railways.
Tomorrow I'm heading back West for a funeral, from Cork.
In 1906 our national rail network stretched across the country and linked basically every big settlement. The journey I want to do tomorrow could have taken a few hours with zero connecting trains.
Ever since the Brits left the Free State in 1922/23 we've systematically ripped up enormous swathes of it, so that it's essentially crippled now. If I wanted to do the same journey on today's rail network, I'd need to go to Dublin and then over to Westport, and it would take about 10 hours.
It fucks me off so much, how much of a great rail network we had, and how much we allowed ourselves to squander it, and obviously I blame the brits for leaving us an impoverished rump state without the ability to maintain the infrastructure they left us.

And I totally understand the technical, logistical, and bureaucratic hurdles that make a quality rail network more complex/difficult to develop than what’s seen in much of Europe, but we could really really benefit from expanding and upgrading our rail network. Rail is hands down the best mode of transportation in all social/economic/environmental contexts, except maybe when it comes to the macro level(where buses take over). The expansion of not only Amtrak service, but regional rail in places like the rust belt, would do wonders for housing cost, congestion, and economic growth. There’s no reason cities like Scranton(for example) shouldn’t have a high speed connection to Buffalo, Chicago, Philadelphia, and New York. Nor should an Amtrak ticket from NY to Philly be $50 if booked same day - and that’s cheap for Amtrak! Flying will always be the best option for coast to coast travel in a reasonable amount of time, but our rail network even between huge east coast cities is dogshit, if it exists at all. I’m in NY, on Long Island, and we have arguably the best public+regional transit in the country, and it’s still a mess.
