Is it catastrophizing to think we might be fucking absolutely cooked as a nation? Like thoroughly fucked beyond hope? Like, for the rest of my life living with the effects of this presidency until the sea swallows me whole?

By definition that is catastrophizing but that doesn't mean you're wrong. The question is what an America that's fucked beyond hope actually looks like, and how long it takes us to get there.

I'm keeping a close eye on the unblemished Red Heifers. The rapture must not come to pass.

Remember that time our grandparents had to tell germany to pipe down bc they initiated a literal world war and committed a genocide that was so big they had to give it a new worse name to describe it? They're a pilot now. There's plenty of terrible countries out there livin really kickass lives

I think catastrophizing as somewhat irrational, or being an overreaction. I'm asking if it's an overreaction to think that for the rest of my natural life (I'm going to die at 80) we'll be dealing with the fallout of this election. All I'm seeing is the worst shit imaginable.

Is it catastrophizing to think we might be fucking absolutely cooked as a nation? Not at all, and I'm not big on jumping into ordeal mode at the drop of a hat. A second Trump term continues the massive tilt toward what is and isn't acceptable from government officials, the folks in their orbit, their backers and financiers... Trump campaigned on a promise of rooting out danger but he is literally the danger. It's like raptors checking the electrical fence for weaknesses in Jurassic Park. They know the weaknesses now, and they're gonna fill em with loyalists to exploit. He already is, we're barely a week in and look at how many of these freaks have promised gigs already. The Trump iteration of "Make America Great Again" began as a larger movement a decade ago... so how could any of his followers believe we're better off today? Biden supposedly tanked their entire country post-pandemic in 3.5 years? Half of that decade Trump fuckin' ran things, so it would reason that he mismanaged prior to COVID as well. Like, what are we even doing? Can you imagine if some of our grandparents or great grandparents were alive and coherent enough to follow what's been going on? A guy running for president who's campaign manager releases press quotes like "clean the shit out of your fucking ears"? Bobert, MTG, Noem, Gaetz... these people should be selling Herbalife somewhere. Again, total culture shift. "Tell me what I want to hear and give the libs hell and I'll believe anything you say." How tf is that sustainable long term?

All I'm seeing is the worst shit imaginable. If he gets two more Supreme Court appointments then we're absolutely going to be seeing the fallout from his two terms for the rest of our lives. As to how fucked up the country gets, that's impossible to speculate, and depends on how you measure the health of a country.

On the other hand, he is the biggest hard-rocker ever to hold the office, doesn't really have a coherent ideology at all, is horrible at actual leadership, and is completely incompetent so he could fuck up his own agenda tremendously.

There's no bottoming out point, either. We can't all come together and recognize problems have the same scale and importance anymore... often times, we can't even agree on what the problem even is. Remember when Trump would get on TV in the thick of COVID uncertainty and blatantly lie about how in control they were? And how it'd disappear by Easter, and then by summer, etc.? There could be famine or people dying in the streets from starvation... Trump + his people will just get on TV and attribute it to other things now, as is proven custom. Probably Haitian immigrant warlords intercepting all the food, like that Phil Hartman SNL sketch with Bill Clinton in the McDonalds.
This is where years of poisoning the publics apinion of American institutions and making "fake news" into a household phrase finally pays dividends for this prick. There are generations of kids being raised now who think this is just what politics is and always has been. Hell, my own MOTHER thinks this was just another installment in Red vs. Blue: American Politics Edition.

I mean a lot of the northeast is on fire and we maybe had rain twice in the last three months. Those are externalities.
Capital is our public religion and it permeates our lives. Pure individualism and myopic drive to push on. It's taking a natural course and any mitigation program is bucking the trend towards rapid disintegration of state and social institutions.
This election is just 4 years of revanchist hard-rockers lining their pockets and making things worse for perceived enemies.
Money won't let a lot of the draconian policies through unless they are actually dealing with straight up ideological goobers which is shaping up to happen. We'll see.

So far it seems Trump is filling positions based around on who is famous. It feels like he’s just throwing out names of people he knows cuz he doesn’t wanna consult with a team to really figure out who is a) knowledgeable in an area and b) can support/facilitate his hard-rocker vision. Just feels like laziness.

It’s easier to implement a mass deportation program than it is to build affordable housing and pursue ambitious public works programs, and that is why broad structural inequities and stupidities are incredibly difficult to address no matter how much money is allocated. And people may say they don’t like this, but on a local, state, and federal level, most politicians and voters tend to want to keep it this way just about any time it could be improved at all.
