LeBron may not give a fuck about black radicals’ historic relationship with AES, but you’re being willfully ignorant if you won’t acknowledge that historically oppressed people (of all backgrounds) have a different relationship to empire and are rightfully more hesitant to fall in line with whites in these “us vs. them” type of debates. Can anyone here actually tell me what these protestors want without some vague, corny diatribe about “free speech”? And why is their struggle center stage of the news everyday when objectively worse atrocities are happening elsewhere simultaneously? Why can America “accidentally” kill 30 people in Afghanistan and receive the benefit of the doubt, but China has to answer to the world every time their police uses physical force against a rioter?
Protestors are wearing Pepe shirts and holding Trump signs. Why the fuck should LeBron align with this movement?
"Why should they ask me to put on a uniform and go 10,000 miles from home and drop bombs and bullets on Brown people in Vietnam while so-called Negro people in Louisville are treated like dogs and denied simple human rights? No I’m not going 10,000 miles from home to help murder and burn another poor nation simply to continue the domination of white slave masters of the darker people the world over. This is the day when such evils must come to an end. I have been warned that to take such a stand would cost me millions of dollars. But I have said it once and I will say it again. The real enemy of my people is here. I will not disgrace my religion, my people or myself by becoming a tool to enslave those who are fighting for their own justice, freedom and equality. If I thought the war was going to bring freedom and equality to 22 million of my people they wouldn’t have to draft me, I’d join tomorrow. I have nothing to lose by standing up for my beliefs. So I’ll go to jail, so what? We’ve been in jail for 400 years.”

Aloha is also a greeting and a feeling. It doesn't really mean "goodbye", it means peace and love and can be used to say goodbye or hello. No shit, so if it can be used in that connotation, maybe it's not a good slogan. You're right, she she totally change the way she speaks and disregard her upbringing to placate confused white liberals. That's not a xenophobic outlook, at all.

And saying things like people wearing Pepe shirts to demonise the whole movement is just dumb too, of course there's going to be some morons when there's 200k protestors. That's what the right has done for any left leaning movement in the last 50 years as well.

In America just being black in your house is enough to get you murdered by police. In Hong Kong you can beat cops with metal pipes and throw Molotov cocktails at them and you still probably won’t die. Yes, LeBron please chant “fuck China” alongside Matt Stone and Trey Parker. Also, I wonder where HK ranks in a bourgeois calculation of freedom? worldpopulationreview.com/countries/freest-countries/

HK is already mostly autonomous. China arguably doesn’t even need it anymore. You can literally murder your pregnant girlfriend and take refuge in HK. This is why that bill was put forth in the first place. It was suspended soooooooo?

I agree with a lot of what you're saying, but China not needing Hong Kong anymore is a Lobsterdog level of an idiotic hot take. China has a trillion dollars tied up in Hong Kong banks.

You realize the extradition bill is so China can't force HK to turn over people they claim as dissidents, right? i.e. they want autonomy from Chinese rule of law.

I’m almost certain HK only accounts for like 3% of their economic share at this point. It used to be a lot higher. I don’t LOVE China or Chinese socialism. But I’m forced to defend it in the face of insincerity. Americans don’t have to worry about being hypocritical or consistent because they will never be held accountable for their words. That’s changing. Morey should have just shut his mouth and worried about how to construct an offense around Russ and Harden.

This is why that bill was put forth in the first place. It was suspended soooooooo? Why does it matter what mainlanders think? That's like saying "oh well most of Spain wants Catalonia to stay", who fucking cares what they think? This is an issue for the people of HK. And there wouldn't be people protesting for this long if the bill was that simple c'mon. In their view it's being used to extradite dissidents and give unfair trials, and it's kinda hard not to side with that given China's track record. I'll be the first to bring up the prison industrial complex and other human right abuses in America, but that doesn't mean I should view it any different when it comes to China because they're more left leaning.

Popping in to say "aloha" means basically everything and anything you want it to mean and it's super weird to wrap your head around. Hell they have a brand of beverages called Aloha Maid (competes with Hawaiian Sun). It's pretty good but will probably give you diabetes.

The country that famously only ever quashes insurrection in territories it absolutely NEEDS, like international finance hub Tibet.

I don't know enough to comment otherwise. This sentence should replace half the posts in this thread Also I'd imagine the theme parks are made so hordes of Han Chinese can gawk at those less fortunate than them, which is a national pastime over there.

Moving away from the NBA/China thing...how incredible is it that John fucking Bolton thought that a foreign policy move was over the line. I nearly spit out my coffee when I read it this morning. That alone should be case closed on impeachment. I wonder if the Republicans are shitting themselves as this gets worse and worse, to the point they can no longer ignore and deny, and yet the situation is now far too complicated for their base to comprehend so support for trump won’t wane. They’re good at this game but how you spin this into red votes is beyond me.

I don't lack reading comprehension, you lack a grasp of how different cultures communicate and support whitewashing for the sake of not offending ignoramuses. Its a typical ignorant American move to assume words in other languages always have a direct translation, which usually isn't how language is translated. in that regard, theywalkedinline is correct. the fact is most americans are this ignorant, but I'd wager that most americans also don't even know that aloha can mean both hello and goodbye. I think most people just think it means hello. I can understand from a marketing perspective that you wouldn't want the possibility of your opponents turning the slogan into something negative, but I really don't think most americans see the word aloha as being anything negative. Like I said, goodbye is not actually a direct translation of the word. fun fact, goodbye is a contraction of the phrase "god be with ye"
