Kroger actually is my local chain. Their corporate offices are a few blocks from me. It’s a pretty good grocery store. They’ve got a lot of store brand vegan and vegetarian food, the prices aren’t bad for the most part, and the fuel points are a nice touch too. But the national acquisition program is troubling.
I do wonder if the cost savings from a large national distribution network might turn them into a natural monopoly (the bigger they get the lower the costs get). There’s not really a way many stores other than Whole Foods and TJ’s/Aldi could compete with them. At that point it’s better to regulate the living hell out of them than try to force more competition or break them up.

The ftc could care less about less consumer competition, they only half way give a shit when consolidation affects upstream supply companies. They will do a dog and pony show to try to make it look like we have functioning anti trust laws before essentially rubber stamping the deal with little push back.

I'm eating like a king for the next week, baby. Meijer has been disappointing me lately. Rarely any good sales and the default prices on most things are higher than Kroger's. |
