Stopping at an Associate Professorship is cool if you have low ambition and are only in it for tenure. But the guy that wrote that essay definitely sounds ambitious.

Well there’s an upshot to this… 6 of the renegades are going to get bought off with PAC money and choice committee assignments. The other 13’s careers are probably over. And since all 19 are just awful, it means we’re about to lose 13 undesirables come 2024.

You can be a lazy associate professor or you can be one of the world-beaters who uses it as a stepping stone and tries to get published, seeks funding stipends for their research, etc. It's not like it's some universal black-and-white thing.

Depends on department size and anything else that effects teaching load. If you don’t HAVE to publish any more because you have tenure, then you probably won’t publish nearly as much so you have actual free time for the first time in years. That’s why positions at small liberal arts schools are very desirable for some academics, because teaching ability, etc. is valued more than constantly publishing shit that probably isn’t really worth publishing.
