“ the usa is a failed state” is the dumbest thing anyone has ever posted in this thread. bro... we lead the developed world in poverty, highest infant AND maternal mortality rate, gun violence, our education system is crumbling, our infrastructure is crumbling, our legislature is in gridlock, our government runs on 30-45 day re-ups, abortion is banned in half the country. there are whole parts of this country that don't have access to clean water. it took 5 years for flint, michigan to get clean water. yeah, it's a failed state. America does suck but "the developed world" is doing a lot of work here. Also bad education and infrastructure are mostly regional problems, and generally what the people in those regions voted for.

I didn’t know a failed state could somehow maintain democratic legitimacy and cities with larger GDPs than entire countries…? The United States is a better place to live today than it has been for most of its history. You gotta turn off the cartoons in your head. Just on infrastructure alone, you’re talking completely out of your ass. The infrastructure bill passed in 2021 wasn’t enough, but it was still substantial. The U.S. supply chain is critically important to the economic livelihood of several countries. It has problems, but it’s still the most robust and extensive trade and transportation network in the history of the world. Bridges, roads, locks and dams, seaports — the necessary repairs and improvements are anything but insurmountable. If the U.S. was a failed state, you’d see it at the Ports of NY/NJ, LA / Long Beach, and Savannah. The necessary decarbonization is a whole other issue, and that’s a real problem. The situation might be worse for the average American, but the empire isn’t on the brink of collapse or something. Idk man, after seeing the way transit looks in even privatized UK and then coming back and having to take the train every single day from NJ to NYC and not think that our infrastructure is completely collapsing. They have clean trains, good track conditions, high speed rail everywhere. The NYC transit system is supposed to be the best in the country and it's been steadily collapsing for decades. The economy is good and Americans make a shit ton of money, always have and always will I think. But the State[instantiated] is failing at functioning the way a state[in abstraction] is meant to. Now you could argue that this is intentional, and that's a different discussion altogether.

he was getting shut down by his own appointees during his campaign to overturn the election. bullshit argument. Ok, I don't want to go too crazy on this, but Trump did not think he was going to win. He did not have a cabinet, and barely had enough staffers to even get going. As such, he had a shit ton of bottom of the barrel political scavengers and career politicians telling him what to do and filling important positions. They, for better or worse, formed a weird backstop against some of the craziest shit Trump wanted to do. Since leaving the White House he has shit on each and every single one of them. This time, they have said this publicly, they are going to be prepared. Cabinet will be true believer crazies. No fucking backstop. Leo is apparently helping with this and their ominous "Project 2025" shit. If you think Trump part 2 will be anything like part 1, I've got some beachfront property in Nebraska to sell you. How is this any different from a man whose highest post was being Mayor of fucking South Bend, Indiana making all of the important federal level transportation decisions for places like New York and Los Angeles?

Tbh he’s not doing a bad job. He doesn’t really make a ton of top-down type decisions. Day to day, he’s leading and administering the roll out of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. (The way federal agencies actually work is not at all intuitive.) Most importantly, Pete Buttigieg isn’t waltzing in on a day one and flushing all institutional knowledge down the toilet.

Now you could argue that this is intentional, and that's a different discussion altogether. US rail is weird. All kinds of laws that make Amtrak shittier, plus the history of the development of the U.S. rail network, plus heavy lobbying by the auto and airline industries. The U.S. also has to outsource a lot of the labor to design passenger rail because we have so little institutional knowledge at this point, and a lot of fragmentation between all the entities that need to coordinate to do it all. Then, resistance from constituencies. I haven’t looked into it a ton, but there’s a Metro extension in L.A. that would go to the South Bay region. Some city councilmember in Torrance and his allies do NOT want the line to be built. A handful of wealthy neighborhood associations really can thwart public works projects in the U.S. far more easily than most other countries — a lot of Americans think that’s democracy in action.

The constituents can go fuck themselves. Most cities in this country have been fucked by white flight voting against effective public transit to the suburbs for almost a century and denying poors access to their neighborhoods regardless of convenience for the rest of the metro.

It's just fucking crazy to me that Republicans have been quietly strip mining our public institutions since the early 80s, killing public education, purposefully driving public welfare programs into the ground for a half century, using every lever of power possible to create a corporate ruling class at the expense of the public, and we are seeing all of that come home to roost at a time where Republicans are completely rudderless as a party and losing nearly every election. But because our Overton Window is still center right (despite more progressive politics gaining traction than we've seen since LBJs presidency) we might as well just let Trump and his goons back in charge. What the fuck?

I like the people who flip their vote every cycle. "I don't know, I just think we could use a change."
I think 100% of those people think that this season of America is getting boring and miss watching the wacky news all day.

Failed state definitely in the sense to live up to any of the bogus ideals we collectively claim.
Most people are checked out of any sense of being a citizen or any sense of living in a community or duties it would include. Choices were deliberately made against an increase in public well-being.
Lots of areas are really depressing from general homelessness, deaths of despair, common infrastructure decay, gutting/privatization of education, the cutting of public transit, hospital consolidations, etc.
Doesn't bode well for the future when people don't see any purpose let alone hope. Those ranks and those problems seem to be getting worse.
Reading the Dollar Tree CEO or what's going on with CVS and pharmacists are little glimpses that show what vested interests see and plan for. Of course supply chains and ports are going to take priority.

I've thought about running for my local school board because we had a couple "parents' rights" nut jobs who ran and won on anti-trans culture war bullshit. That shit is scarier to me honestly, because it speaks to how much better these fucks are at recruiting and infiltrating places where their policies can quietly do the most damage. Its always been a long game for Repubs and we've always underestimated the depths of their depravity. I just know the second I ran someone would drag out my posting history on board and I'd be finished.
