I don't really understand why it is a great idea to give money to people to buy a home when they are already planning on buying a home, with the idea that this will bring down the cost of housing. It seems like it would increase the cost of housing?? Like, a lot of YIMBYs who wanna just ham-fistedly raze all zoning codes to the ground are just as dogmatic and wrongheaded as people who think you can just press the rent control button, but I don't know how you bring down the cost of housing in the longterm without a concerted national effort to rethink zoning ordinances and reduce the cost of constructing/renovating residential buildings. The state is going after some based on a previous law that made public transit areas targets for incentivized development. Some have adapted and owners of dwindling retail spaces sold it. There were two 250 unit buildings that wen't up within 1 mile of a commuter rail station for example. That's been a success in some areas. Some towns are holding out and were taken to court by the state so they're pretty aggressive of doing what's necessary. That ambition is commendable if anything but we'll see. |
