"Yaaaaa, Bill, I saw you reenact the murder of George Floyd on Twitter and also post "send them all back". I'm gonna need you to wear this button saying you're a racist and also make you watch this 15-minute video on racial sensitivity, thaaaaaaaanks".

seriously? i really don't give a shit about the well being of racists. i care more that marginalized groups don't have to be around racists. it's not hard. we should make it socially unacceptable and dangerous to be a racist. I don't disagree with any of this. Also not the point. then what is the point? because, yeah, racists should be ostracized from communities until they're willing to change. i don't care at all how hard it will be for them to find a job. regardless, it's an absurd point. these racists who are fired are exceptions and they usually end up okay anyway. also, it's one thing to be a white person around a racist person, it's an entirely different thing to be a poc around a racist.

Open up the prisons and just put in all the racists. But in all seriousness, have you all never worked with a racist? It fucking sucks having to hear that shit at work, especially if they're above you. I worked with a "libertarian" who was clearly an alt-right chud who was just insufferable. His main goal was to buy a home in Montana or something to get away from all the "crime". He of course was a Trump supporter and would often drop all the dog whistles that the average apolitical person probably wouldn’t pick up on. In the end he got in a shouting match with a black female manager and accused her of discriminating against him because he was a white male. He was fired on the spot and we all rejoiced. Yeah I've worked a few jobs that were basically all white staff, and people get real comfortable when they don't have to look over their shoulder. Even worked for a landscaping company that was owned by a 2nd generation Indian, yet he was a god fearing conservative who always complained about immigrants. Was bizarre to say the least.

Worked with someone like that recently. Talked real loose with the white dudes. Slipped up with me and another brown dude.

How do you know someone voted trump? Cuz they'll tell you. All the fucking time. And throw out their apinion about everything, and then there's just a collective silence while everyone just tries to do their shitty job and ignore him.

I think Pat makes a good point to an extent. Like, I personally don't give a shit if someone gets fired for being racist, but then what? They just suck and die poor cuz they can't get a job? I mean they'll probably be fine anyway and find a job with other racists but idk. Do you just segregate them to their own lil racist island? Idk Still pro-canceling people tho I don’t think these questions have been adequately answered in this discussion. I’m mostly concerned with the net impact or bottom line of doxxing someone and getting them fired. Is there a net benefit? I understand the catharsis of seeing one of these pricks go down. I mean, I love to see it. But don’t they just dig further into their positions? Don’t they just end up with a massive gofundme, while being lionized by Breitbart and Fox News as a great martyr, galvanizing the right wing worldview? I certainly don’t see any of them coming out with a contrite about-face after having been exposed as racist shitholes. To be clear, I think they should lose their jobs, as no one should have to work with racists. I’m just wondering if it does any good aside from making us feel triumphant for a minute.

Also how much they're paying for that shit. And thank you for not posting if/or when joe rogan shows up in your feed.

To be clear, I think they should lose their jobs, as no one should have to work with racists. I’m just wondering if it does any good aside from making us feel triumphant for a minute. There's certainly an irony in the idea of kettling racists into their own easily recognizable group, but most of those people don't get a golden crowdfunded parachute and the more it happens, the more it taxes the racist economy. If you're concerned that people getting shitcanceled are actually being enriched(despite the online harassment), the "koch brothers" aren't going to spend on every central park karen because it doesn't help politically. I'm pretty sure that unlike bil lpr, breitbart mentions don't pay the bills. So it's a societal net benefit to see people shamed and cost opportunities for being shit heads. As for changing people's views, I personally don't care. I interact with racists on a regular basis and I'm not in the business of changing their minds. I tax or refuse to give them business I can afford and I see other people do the same. I'm not real sure you can explain to an adult that all people are created equal and it's their actions that define them as good or bad, it's on them to figure out what's worthwhile and what's wrong with them.

I think the biggest "problem" with getting people fired for being racist in their private lives is that there's no way to ensure that "being a racist" stays the sole reason this happens.
People getting fired for going to socialist book clubs and shit. But I suppose that kind of HUAC shit has already happened once before and we should prepare for it to begin anew with this "Antifa is domestic terrorism" nonsense.

I think the biggest "problem" with getting people fired for being racist in their private lives is that there's no way to ensure that "being a racist" stays the sole reason this happens. That's the only good faith argument against this sort of thing, really. You shouldn't fuck with people's livelihood or income over political/ideological reasons because it could be turned against you personally. I don't really agree with that sentiment, though. I guess there's potential for some sort of anti-communist current to gain traction in this political climate but as it stands the right wing version of getting people fired is death threats, burning people's cars, spray-painting slurs on houses, or god forbid actual acts of violence. It mostly just seems like concern trolling to me to be mad about getting a nazi fired and assumes there would be some sort of truce if twitter accounts stopped doxxing racists, which happens to be effective and has a pretty substantial chilling effect on these assholes going public with their beliefs or attempting to organize and demonstrate.

I don’t have my thoughts about this clearly organized right now, but I do see a prevalent impulse to punish people for being BAD and WRONG in online spaces. It’s been awhile since I read Foucault but it’s definitely not something I feel very comfortable with. Punishment doesn’t automatically equal justice and if “the left” is trying to confront policing and incarceration it should probably examine its own authoritarian impulses, at least when it comes to dealing with social transgressions/harms.
On the other hand, if you play stupid games you deserve to win stupid prizes so people being shamed for their idiotic, racist displays seems pretty fair.

I get worrying good people will get punished because bad people are punished. But I feel like nuance is needed. Like, do I want some guy fired because he sang all the words to ruff ryders anthem? No. But should people be fired for real transgressions, totally. Like lady who called cops on dude for no reason, stating his race, knowing how cops react to black people in this country? Yeah. That’s not the kind of person you want representing your company. Someone who goes to a trump rally or a BLM protest isn’t going to get fired.

There will be people who see this and still think prosecutors and the police don’t work together on false convictions.

its all good.
true story: one of my friends from college was also a Drew, into the same kind of music and politics and generally a very rad guy and one of my favorite people. one day a guy who lived on his floor in his dorm wanted to start going by Drew instead of Andrew, but he was a giant knob who was into frat life and college republican shit, so me and Drew made everyone call him Andy instead. to this day, that guy is still an Andy and has not earned the rank of Drew.
