Been thinking of going away for a city break on my own lately, but tend to get a bit nervous about new places, especially with getting around. Any tips for an anxious guy looking to give this a try, as well as what to do when you're in your own company in a foreign country? Go to Copenhagen & hire a bike. There’s loads of great museums & bars. If you’re travelling alone stay in a hostel perhaps. You’ll be able to meet people for a pint if you want some company.

Anything cool to see or do in Birmingham, AL?? I’m heading there for work on Sunday and have some free time I've only been there a couple times, and it was pretty boring. The downtown is pretty dead at night, but there are a handful of cool bars. Sorry, I can't remember any of the names.
Also, be careful where you go haha.

Most major cities have easy to navigate public transportation that is synced with Google Maps, so getting around has never really been an issue for me.
As for what to do...go do tourist shit, walk around a city for miles, google a good place to eat, go to a bar in the afternoon and talk to a bartender...they usually have the best tips on what to do.
I've had some fairly boring days, but for the most part, it's not hard to keep entertained, and you get to do it at your own pace!

Yeah, solo traveling is definitely the best, I can't imagine doing it any other way now. I like just walking around cities to see what the neighborhoods are like. Doesn't matter if there's something "to see" or not. Just listening to music and exploring the city to get a feel for it beyond the tourist attractions. Everything else you suggested is spot on, too.

I travelled to various local cities and to eastern Europe on my own. There is definitely some europhic/uplifting feeling being in a foreign city with absolutely no idea on whats going on. I definitely recommend staying in share room hostels, not only are they much cheaper but you'll most likely meet some nice people.

has anybody ever taken Air China from the states to Japan? its way cheaper but i've heard its definitely a "get what you pay for" type deal, just looking for first-hand experiences etc, or if you think its definitely worth it to shell out for a nicer flight.

Took 10 days off work to go to California for the first time last month because of Sound and Fury. San Francisco for three days with Alcatraz thrown in, a day each in Yosemite and San Jose and LA for the rest of the trip. Hope to do Los Angeles and San Diego if next years lineup is stacked.
Anyone have any tips about Austin? Thinking of spending a weekend (maybe a week) there in January

I considered this but I can't hang with the 19-30+ hour layover in Shanghai. If I was still in my early twen'ties I would probably do it just to save scratch; instead, I'm approaching 35 and decided to spend more and get a 16 hour flight with short layovers.

Shanghai is a great city though, transport from the airport downtown and back is fast and cheap. Normaly you should be able to prolong one layover on your booking without additional fees.

yeah i saw some flights with fairly short layovers in like Beijing, but if its cheaper, i'd definitely spend a day in Shanghai just for the fuck of it.
but i also heard some shit like they don't let you take your phone out and stuff for the entire flight and shit like that, was just wondering how it is like comfort-wise.

I've flown with several Chinese airlines (Air China, China Eastern Airlines, China Southern Airlines) and haven't had a problem with any of them. I definitely had my phone out and listened to music/watched movies during the flight, not sure where that rumor came from but I don't think it's true. Most of the Chinese airlines also have their own private lounges in the airports in China which are pretty nice. You can only get in when you show your boarding pass and they have big reclining lounge chairs and free food & drink in there, so if you have a layover you don't have to mill about the airport.
If you can get a good price for the flight you should go for it. If you have a longer layover in China you'll be able to cruise around for the day and China is awesome.

My girlfriend and I just returned fairly recently from a few weeks in Taiwan. Thanks everyone who gave me some tips in the old thread! Taiwan is an amazing place, definitely one of my favorite countries I've visited. Everything about it was great, highly recommend people go and check it out!

There seemed to be some dudes in my Amsterdam thread who didn't know about this, so: You can save a TON of money by packaging your flight + hotel together on Expedia. Keep it in mind if you're looking into trips in the future.

Some friends and I are going to Germany at the end of next month for 10 days. So far we’ve got plans to visit Brussels, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, and possibly Berlin. Hit me with some recommendations

Just booked a trip to Belize in the spring. Anyone ever been? Belize is pretty cool but it gets real weird real fast outside of the touristy areas. Like dudes in toyota truck beds with guns weird. The snorkeling and diving is great though.

The snorkeling and diving is great though. Are they like robbing people or just driving around looking hard? I'd like to get out of the super touristy areas, but I'll stay there if it's dangerous haha.

Looking into a trip to Oaxaca in July with friends for Guelaguetza, in addition to Tokyo in October/November, San Francisco and Portland in November, London in December, possibly Seattle in January for my birthday and Amsterdam in March.
I'm getting a little travel crazy and borderline irresponsible with my vacation time at work, in case it's not obvious.

Word up. Going to Portugal for the first time in a week, Glasgow in November before moving to Melbourne in January and Wellington a year after that.

Yeah I've never heard good things about Frankfurt. If I were you I'd either spend 3-4 days in Berlin, or check out Hamburg and Leipzig. Berlin is my favourite city in Europe, but you have to spend at least a few nights there to get a good feel for it.

They shouted at us and were driving towards us and a shop owner took us inside and they drove away. Didn't seem like they wanted to exchange instas.
