Going to Victoria and Vancouver with a baby in a couple weeks. Going to a Canucks game! Looking for recommended parks, museums, vegetarian spots, beer, etc. Sorry, just saw this now. Do you still need any info? We just got back--had a great time! Vancouver got cleaned up or something? Not nearly as seedy as I remember going a little over 10 years ago.

Just bought my airfare for Netherlands/Belgium in July. Had a friend move there recently, so headed there to visit him and explore. I wen't to Belgium when I was 18 and never been to the Netherlands, kind of avoided it because it always seemed like a tourist hellscape but hoping to get out to some of the shit outside of Amsterdam and will check out Rotterdam. Belgium wise gonna stop in Brussels and Antwerp, might do Bruges depending on scheduling.
Should note: I'm going with my wife otherwise I'd go check out some WWII grounds and stuff like Market Garden but I don't think I can trick her into that.
I liked Bruges a lot. Felt it was worth it even with the touristy aspects. For a spot with similar vibes but less of the touristy stuff Haarlem is pretty great, and really easy to get to from Amsterdam. Have heard mixed reviews on Brussels. People seem to like Ghent but I’ve never been.
Haarlem is on the list of places to stop in along with Zaanse Schans/Zaandam, Utrecht (Where my friends are), and maybe Zandvoort depending on weather)
Looking at hotels and stuff we might switch up the Brussels stay (4 nights) to stay in Ghent and do daytrips to everything we want to see including Bruges and certain things in Brussels.

I was going to suggest using Brussels as a homebase for doing exactly that, but Ghent would work too. The regional trains run quite often, and it saves you from having to lug all your shit around.

I don’t know what kind of budget you’re working with but the hotel we stayed at in Ghent was incredible (“1898 The Post Hotel”).

Yeah Belgium defs very day trippable so that plan sounds solid.
I wanna go there and drink beers in bars that are old ass cellars from the Middle Ages again one day (you should do this daily).

Figuring out our budget since the airline tickets were a little more than we expected (thanks 750 bucks in taxes/fees/charges per ticket)

Got robbed by the pigs in Mexico City a couple weeks ago. Classic Mexico! Do tell Not much to it. Was walking to dinner on a side street and 2 coppers showed up out of nowhere. Searched me for drugs without reason, took 2000 pesos out of my wallet (about $175 Canadian). Said if we didn't coopeate we'd be going to jail. I had my friend on the phone the whole time who is a local who was telling them off and trying to reason with them but no luck. The pig who did most of the talking was just a little fucker too, maybe 5'7". The whole time I was thinking that I could have crushed him if he wasn't a pig in uniform.

There was a couple dark ass blocks in Vallodolid that we had to travel to and fro and I was just waiting for our gringo asses to get robbed. Only other time in my life have I actually been nervous walking home was in Bay View section of San Francisco in the middle of the night.

The cocktails alone are worth a visit so if you don’t end up staying there you should grab a drink there at least!

Girlfriend and I landed in London last night. We’ve explored Paddington and checked out the Kusama exhibit at Tate Modern. What’s good in terms of record stores and markets and whatnot?

Go to fortitude bakehouse and get a dipped mocha croissant (can’t recall the actual name), or a creme brulee donut from bread ahead (i think), in borough market.
These are both on my to-do list.

There's a punk/hardcore spot in Camden called All Ages that's got decent newer stuff and some merch/second hand t-shirts but nothing rare or obscure, really.

I think it's worse than ever. It's very centralized to a couple of areas though so if you don't go near them you wont see much, but when it's bad it's baaaad

I was just kinda surprised at how many people told me I should go to Gastown with my 1 year old. I first wen't there over 20 years ago to drink even before I was 19, and it was not the same touristy spot it is now. Just out of curiosity, where are the bad spots in Van now?

East Hastings which runs just behind gastown is really bad, and it kinda stretches into Chinatown and up to science world skytrain station. Where are you from?

Haha, the Skytrain was on holiday hours on Good Friday, so we had to take the bus from near the Burrard station area to the Amtrak train station by Science World at 5am. Saw some people having a good time!

I'm also surprised you thought it was less seedy! I've been finding that it's getting worse and worse. Some areas are definitely really bad but whenever I go it seems like the grime is spreading across the city. Downtown Eastside has always been bad but now areas like Granville are also getting quite a bit worse with open drug use, boarded up buildings, etc.
