feel like this is an odd comparison but I voted anyway There's a reason I chose these two. We're voting for the best movie of the 80s on a different board and only one of these will move on to the next round.

Love both, but Bladerunner is untouchable to me.

The Shining. No doubt.
I tried re-watching Blade Runner a couple weeks back and I just... still can't get into it, I'm sorry.
Visually? It's absolutely stunning, and the universe the movie creates is great, but I just don't feel like the actual story is all that compelling. Or the story is compelling, it just felt like so much more could have been done with it. I watched the "final" directors cut version, having watched the super long versions previously. I was left sorta like "...that's it?" when the tears in rain scene finally came. It felt like I had just watched a YouTube "best Blade Runner scenes" version of the original film.
The Shining in itself is a masters class in film making. I would have killed to have scene it in theaters when it was originally released.

Blade Runner is good, but The Shining is top 5 for me.

I know you think you're being clever but don't do this. We're voting on the best 80s movies. That's literally the only thing in common they have to have - the decade when they came out.

I chose Blade Runner.
Really tough decision, but I think the Blade Runner score clinches it.

Is the comparison just because Blade Runner used unused Shining footage?

It’s just so strange to compare these two movies. What do they have in common?

can't compare two genres.
a better question would be star wars v blade runner or ghost in the shell v blade runner maybe even shinning v hereditary

can't compare two genres. a better question would be star wars v blade runner or ghost in the shell v blade runner maybe even shinning v hereditary Hereditary isn't from the 80s and other movies you mentioned have already been eliminated. The whole tournament isn't based on genre vs genre but movie vs movie based on which people like more. Groups of 4 were randomly selected and from I think 200 movies we're down to semifinals. The other board is Stephen King centric and someone said it'd be interesting to see The Shining face off against Blade Runner on a board not full of Stephen King fans.

Last I checked Blade Runner doesn't have the line: Wendy, darling, light of my life! I'm not gonna hurt you. I'm not gonna hurt ya. I'm just gonna bash your brains in. I'm gonna bash 'em right the fuck in!

BR for me is a far more casual watch. I can put it on and do work and maybe look at the screen every couple of minutes. I cant do that with the shining. Once it's on, even if I happen to catch it midway through I either have to be fully engaged or I just wont watch it at all.
Both are fantastic but the shining just does more for me.

I guess Blade Runner if I had to choose.
