Personally, I would prefer a thin base layer in approximately 40 degree weather. The thickness of the base layer is always subject to change as temperatures lower. I stay cozy

At least what I am thinking of in my head is long John’s, but I am calling them long underwear because I thought that was the modern terminology but maybe I am very wrong.

I’ve been wearing long Johns (aka Uniqlo man leggings) for the past two days. The temp has ranged from 15 f to 30 f in that span of time. I find this to be pretty reasonable.
