It’s not controversial to claim that capitalism required the modern bureaucratic state in order to develop. The complexity of today’s trade and transportation systems evolved over an extensive historical process. The financial mechanizations and system of resource allocation didn’t just pop up out of nowhere some day. It’s not an arbitrary configuration.

That we’ve reached a point where the development of all the logistics and rational machinations have become irrational and counterproductive under the current mode of production, yeah I’d agree. I have a proposition for the communists, so, typically, most of the communists I know are not big fans of AI. But, if you think about it, AI is actually the fastest path to communism. if implemented correctly, artificial intelligence could theoretically solve for abundance. Like, we could totally get to a situation where nobody has to work, everybody is provided for with a comfortable state of being, comfortable living, AI could automate all the farming, dense nuggs of fat buds out systemic corruption, thereby bringing us to, as close as possible, genuine equality. Everything everybody loves about communism, but without the collective farm. Cuz let’s be real, enforced farming is really not a vibe.

But if you look at it as a diagnosis of our modern world with ideas on how things could be structured in a way that's more egalitarian and humane, it makes sense.

Motherfucker I've got people telling me you can't build roads without government. Communism isn't the "one" idea, and I think the main issue is people become too binary with it. There's great things to take out of it, but this idea of romanticizing failed states or acting like it's the only system to overthrow capitalism is kinda ridiculous.

The governance and political organizations of various cultures and civilizations is not arbitrary. It could be the USSR, it could be Brazil, it could be the U.S. – it doesn’t matter. You can see right now today what countries that lack an efficient, stratified bureaucratic state are able to accomplish, and compare them with countries that do. Logistics and management matter. The ideology of the USSR was different from that of the developed capitalist countries, but it had officials and academics who studied engineering, management, logistics, and the rest, who created and sustained practices, codes, and the rest. Government is not a thing; it is a system of relations between people.

I’ve read it. It’s somewhere or I gave it away, I forget. I mean, Debt is the definitely “the” book, but Bullshit jobs was entertaining. I’ve got a bunch more Bookchin somewhere. I’ve got to be honest though, I’m glad I’ve read all of that from him but, mostly it was circling the drain.

I've heard Graeber is an entertaining read, but I dunno. Some of the claims seem to take such a "bird's eye" view and despite the fact that he is an social scientist by training he doesn't seem to actually in engage in social scientific research (such as actual case studies rather than sweeping anecdotes over several thousand years and several thousand miles).

Like, I'm working with bureaucrats right now today. I'm about to have a meeting with members of a very large bureaucracy. There are problems with that agency (i.e., engineers who are good at building and widening highways, which we need to stop doing). But it isn't as impenetrable or Kafka-esque as I would assume Graeber would have it.
