Industrial maintenance technician is one of the highest in-demand jobs in manufacturing. A lot of companies are outsourcing because they simply don’t have access to the talent, so big contract groups have cropped up. The jobs aren’t union, but they can start around 70-80k depending on your ability to work with electrical systems and PLCs (future of the work).
Machinist jobs don’t pay that well anymore (depending on region/market) unless you’re tool & die making. There are exceptions; a union gig in much of the Midwest is still pretty decent. Shops are becoming smaller and more specialized as well. Engineering jobs are going to go to folks with those degrees, although the best machine builders I’ve met are really just engineers without the degrees.

Some really successful dudes I’ve met over the years are “self taught” engineers. Really good point.

do you have interest in the building side, or just parts design/manufacturing? I've never really looked at the parts side of mechanical engineering so I don't know if there's a bigger draw there money wise, but if you've already got a level of cad skill there's a fair amount of growth opportunity and challenge on the MEP side of construction, and it's only getting to be more required on projects of any size. right now this new job is gonna be more straight mechanical stuff, but I was looking into doing a general cad certificate (before I got the job) so I could get my feet wet in a little bit of mechanical, architecture, and electrical drafting stuff. But that’s not happening now that I found a job that’s just gonna train me and if I pursue engineering through them, it looks like it’ll be some mechanical stuff with the potential of some structural and chemical (working for a plastic fabricator). I took a CAD class in high school that was focused on architecture so I’ve done floor plans/elevations for houses.

A lot of manufacturing jobs are a joke pay-wise. As far as being a maintenance tech, that’s where my thinking was when I asked my company to send me to school so I can service our machines; we currently contract a handful of different techs for the different brands of machines we have and they’re all retirement age and come from all across the country to do service. Their goal is to keep me there for life and I figured it’d be wise to invest in my skills so that it’s worth it for both parties long-term. But my manager is an idiot so she didn’t see it that way and I’m off to greener pastures.

Trade Compliance at a fairly large adhesives company. I fell into this via a temp job not far out of school. BA in marketing which was dumb and I didn’t like at the time but my identity apparently is following through begrudgingly with things I don’t like. It’s Customs compliance but also dealing with adjacent PGA’s that regulate imported product. I’m 12 years in. I can’t complain but do anyway. It’s good money especially for the upper Midwest.
I’ve never gotten comfortable in a corporate setting. The type of people and environment stress and get me anxious easier so I can come off like a weird cranky dick which doesn’t help me in career development or advancement. Type A sales people, marketing people, PLMs, finance norms all so excited to climb the ladder makes me ill. It’s baffling that I manage to have a career considering how disinterested I am in it. I like to think I’d be happier doing something else, but Work is something that I’m forced to do and I’m only really motivated by fear of being poor.
If anything I find home development and real estate is more interesting. Not as an agent but developing actually interesting homes unlike the hideous, aesthetically irresponsible subdivisions that the average person is too fucking tasteless to realize is hideous. I hate the common subdivision with great passion. But hell, where does one even start at this age. I’d hoped to already have a few more rental properties by now so I can give work the final two weeks sooner rather than later. So far just the one. Bleh. I don’t come from ambitious roots. Besides that I’m more suited for working at a library (my first job). I really should have gone into library sciences. Or researching for something regarding sociology. Professions with the least general populace interaction possible and no o-count Sales people.

I manage the cave aged program of a vegan cheese company.
This entails R&D, planning/scheduling, and endless trouble shooting (blue mold infections will be the death of me). I used to do part fabrication/maintenance at a brewery, so sometimes when machinery breaks down at the creamery I get roped into fixing that stuff too.

I’m a facilities coordinator for a delivery company. My portfolio is the us south and uk. I’ve had 11 jobs since 2009 and have hated most of them. When I first started posting here I thought I was going to be a teacher. Life comes atcha fast!

Still a software developer and this is the longest I've done any one thing (7 years). More or less stuck in it now because of family and lifestyle creep.

Unemployed. Was (more or less)working in commercial printing/CAD for 5 years. Got laid off last March and decided to take a year long vacay to clear my head. Currently trying to get into IT, software engineering, or web development. Landed my first IT gig two months after this post, been doin it ever since. Three years of being a professional jerkoff.

Earnestly looking for a new job since my currently company is going through an increasingly frustrating merger. It's been 9 years and the job market/application process is fucking rough. I'm seriously considering paying for one of those AI application tools that blasts out 100s of resumes a day. My application-to-interview ratio is shockingly low -- I've started/stopped my search several times now and it's just exhausting.
