Knowing what that is about, you must be exhausted The stress level is brutal and I often fantasize about getting out of the industry for my mental health, but the pros are still outweighing the cons I do prefab shutdown work for you guys, and even that is stressful

decided to not pursue a PhD program and graduate with just a masters, the plan was to work in overseas HE / restart prev. consultant stuff this was jan/feb 2020. truly, the most perfect of possible timing over the last year couldn't fly anywhere despite having 3 separate contracts for jobs and visas all set up, couldn't even leave plague island been out of work apart from temporary shitty customer service jobs here and there. life's pretty grim rn ey

I work on cell towers. Used to work on the physical tower, now I just do installs/troubleshooting/programming of new equipment and DC electrical work. The company I work for us complete shit. The pay is good but they treat us like dirt and we have zero benefits.
Really trying to get into something else, but I don’t even know where to start. I’ve got so much time and experience in this field, but I’m not sure if I even want to did this work anymore.

how do people going to grad school full time afford rent/bills on a part time gig GI Bill covered most of my tuition plus paid my rent during the semesters. It’s a good deal. Anyway, I just finished an international business masters program. Trying to find a job now. Having some serious existential crises about whether or not to just cash out and do the private sector thing or work for like an ngo or something.

Digital marketing specialist. I seriously don't know how I ended up in this shit considering I used to be a tech luddite and hated most things marketing related. Was going to become a copywriter then just fell into an entry level job in this industry. Rubbing shoulders with general marketers and Google people sucks but the upskilling opportunities in this line of work is really decent. Instead of going back to school and collecting more debt I learn it on the job while getting paid. The world's only ever going to get more digital so i figure I should probably stay in this lane. Currently at a big corporate which is definitely soul zapping but I've had way worse jobs and I can't complain about the better pay now.

subject matter expert for a telecommunications company, specialising in small business. the truth is I just work in a call centre supporting staff taking calls answering their stupid bullshit that they should already know the answer to, working from home since April 2020. moved a month ago so now my actual office is a 7 hour drive away. it could be worse I guess.

Machinist/fabricator, but also back in school pursuing an engineering degree A good nights sleep sounds pretty good That is a really solid set of skills to have as an engineer. Good shit bud, props for going after that degree and hope the hard yards get you where you wanna be. Thanks, I do a some "amateur engineering" at my job now (r&d, drafting, prototyping, gearing up for manufacturing etc) and a year ago had this moment of clarity of "why don't I just go and get a degree and do this all the time?" Hoping I can wrap up school and step into a position where I have influence on projects from design to completion. Not really picky about the industry. Hopefully I'm not just throwing money into a hole to end up a CAD jockey.

I've been doing photoplotting the past couple years (essentially operating giant laser printers that run on G code) while doing some CAD/CAM conversion as part of my job. Was thinking about getting into machining but entry-level jobs pay a lot less than what i'm currently making. Recently got hired for a CAD position at a plastic fabricator, so I get to go further with my CAD skills and im psyched about it. I'm hoping they'll support me in taking some engineering courses but I'll cross that bridge when I get there. I believe part of this new gig will be doing CAM conversions for CNC machines so I'm pretty excited bout the skills im about to pick up. I just have to pass a drug test on wednesday that im kinda nervous about.

I asked this new company in my interview if they’d support it and they said sure, they always want to promote employees. I have a lot of CAD stuff to learn before I even begin to actually consider returning to school, so either way I’m excited about picking up some new CAD skills.

All good. What does an Epic rollout entail and why did you describe it as the most fun you’ve had at work in a while? Just tryna see what something like that even looks like in practice. I had a few different roles. The first step was working with IT and helping to design workflows for end-users in their specific fields. I specifically helped with the build for new admits to the ED and for the psychiatric units. Basically meeting with the staff from there and finding what their needs were. Did a bit of a gap analysis as well; basically what can your current EHR build do? What do you like about it? What don't you like about it? How can we bridge that gap? Second part was training. I love teaching. Basically two weeks of showing people how to use the new system; admissions, full health assessments, transfers, accessing outside records, discharge planning, etc. Third part (and the least amount of fun) is the manual data entry. Basically, you manually enter all of your current patient's data so that there's no gaps in their care/loss of data when the system transitions in the middle of their hospital stay. The only fun part about this is that the pay is hourly and most hospitals will literally force-feed you takeout. Getting paid overtime rates to stuff pizza and thai food rules. Fourth part is assistance after the new EHR "goes live". Basically being on stand-by to troubleshoot if there's any issues in the system or end-users need a little extra help with the transition. With the degree I'm getting that would end up being my full-time job but with more responsibility and more of a focus on maintenance and quality improvement.

Managers like that are the worst, probably the best thing getting away from there. Not sure about your craft but in mine companies like to take on new people and if it’s a good fit they’ll pay your way through most of what you need to just keep advancing. It’s a win / win I guess.

It’s a win / win I guess. yeah she’s one of the worst managers I’ve ever had, and that’s saying a lot. Totally hands-off with my department, which is cool because she stays out of our hair, but overall it worked to my disadvantage because she’s completely out of touch with my skills/intelligence. The manager of our CAD department was great about teaching me what she could and encouraging me that I’m too smart to be doing what I’m doing right now and she’s happy that I found something better. The job listing for this new job was for an entry-level person and it was absolutely a “well train the right person” deal where I knew I was a perfect fit. I have my bachelors in marketing so one of the people I interviewed with said I could potentially move to sales but like I want no part of that shit lol. But they also said I can potentially do some engineering stuff because they do have engineers on staff. This is just a good career move in general because it can apply more broadly to a lot of manufacturing/machining/3D printing companies than where I’m currently at, cuz if I wanted to find a photoplotting/photomasking job I’d be pretty SOL, it’s way too niche for me to have a future.

do you have interest in the building side, or just parts design/manufacturing? I've never really looked at the parts side of mechanical engineering so I don't know if there's a bigger draw there money wise, but if you've already got a level of cad skill there's a fair amount of growth opportunity and challenge on the MEP side of construction, and it's only getting to be more required on projects of any size.
