first thing they put out is cool. when they were doing a bad job trying to be leeway on desperate measures and writing lyrics about hating women. i couldn't get into it. sounded to me like hardcore in a tin can.

Stopped reading at multiracial. Music journalists really be setting race relations back 50 years by insinuating that only in 2023 is it possible for white people to share a band with black people.

Are Turnstile at the point yet where their record label will do their best to bury all traces of their past records as to try to homogenize their sound and image as the Nonstop Feeling band?
Edit: sorry I meant Glow On, Turnstile’s wiki page lists their records in opposite order of every other band wiki for some reason. Shows how much I listen to this band.

Looking back, what are the other bands that have come from hardcore or punk and made it huge like this in recent years? Have they surpassed everyone? Like I feel that Code Orange were pretty massive for a while but Turnstile seems to be bigger than them now?

When Riley passed a lot of big metal guys were talking about it - they must have been on the verge.

power trip and code orange don't come close to the status turnstile's been able to achieve, mainly because they don't have that crossover appeal. knocked loose are up there which is crazy to think about because it's really just reappropriated chugga chugga riffs and insanely shrill vocals.

Power Trip certainly was, but they're firmly a thrash metal band and the ceiling for metal bands is pretty low. Probably wouldn't have necessarily been playing stadium tours.
Same deal with Code Orange only nu metal has a little more reach than traditional thrash. But I feel like they've just stagnated since covid and have been exclusively opening for slipknot and not much else.

drain is probably next to crossover. i know this because their imagery is cutesy and colorful with the whole beach aesthetic, and their shows are very welcoming/inclusive. they also sound like down the road they could write hooks and anthemic choruses that'll appeal to wider audiences.

Drain has the west coast on lock for the rest of the decade but idk if they will reach the level of turnstile and knocked loose. Either way they resurrected epitaph and secured themselves as a "California" band.

Next EP drain will probably go more the sound of their descendents cover. Probably won’t get massive but opening for bands like rise against or other shit like that

Y’all gotta think fourth dimensionally. It’s not how they sound NOW. It’s how they could sound and how they could be marketed. Assume everyone that’s been discussed will pivot sonically to radio rock and/or nu metal (which has demonstrated once before it can be a chart topping genre). Then it’s a question of marketability which is a medley of PR, bad journalism, social media, and corporate sponsorships.

Hawthorne Heights had chart-topping single in 2006 and their vocalist was barely packing out a 250 capacity all-ages venue less than ten years later. It’s a stupid thing to speculate about. Why care about how big any of these bands get in the first place?

Also technically, MCR came from the hardcore scene. Frank Iero was in this screamo band from North Jersey called Pencey Prep, and he laid down vocals on Each Breath Haunted, the record by the Banner.
