I think on top of Turnstile having more crossover appeal due to being more inherently melodic, I think pandemic really fucked a handful of hardcore bands that were clearly on an upward trajectory. Code Orange got nominated for a Grammy and Underneath would get them another nom, Vein were progressively playing bigger venues, Higher Power had their record produced by Gil Norton. Quality of music aside those bands definitely suffered a hit in popularity because of not being able to tour. Turnstile and Knocked Loose dropped new material just as shows were happening again and to an extent I think that helped them.

i love how being a band is so novel, they make a point of no clicks or backing tapes. acting like playing a song is a high wire act. he's also saying the drummer is shit, unless he's confusing the tempo and rhythm changes with an unsteady meter.

Wanna make money? Learn a trade. Playing music isn't a marketable skill in 2023 under capital.

like i said: if you feel so inclined to dick around, release a demo, and play some basement gigs that's fine (some of my favorite bands only ever released a demo tape). whatever floats your boat, man. but why would you fault others for taking a chance and setting their ambitions a bit higher, especially if they retain true to themselves? people wanna leave their mark on the world and not just with some five minute demo tape and four moderately attended gigs.

I think being in a band full time is exhausting and if youre playing to pay your bills at some point youre gonna stop loving it. And then you will write shitty music and people will stop liking your band. Its a vicious cycle. Every band should be Pissed Jeans or Hank Wood and write an amazing album every 2-5 years with a few weekend dates sprinkled in between. Imo.

saw Hank Wood, a few weeks ago, and agree, in that, I wish more bands could sound as great as them. One of my favorite bands going, right now.
