What’s with the Arc’teryx worship these days? Recently saw some kid at a show who had an Arc’teryx hat and jacket, then at one point took the jacket off to reveal an Arc’teryx hoodie. Is their stuff that well-made or are people just paying for the brand? The jackets look dope, but you can get the same thing from Outdoor Research or North Face Their products used to be made in Canada, justifying the exorbitant prices, but they did one of those cool switch-a-roos where they moved most production to low-wage, low-regulation countries but kept the prices the same. you don’t expect the ceo to buy a USED yacht do you?

What’s the next hype outdoor brand? I always the Rab was pretty cool and I’ve been getting targeted insta ads for Klättermusen and 66north.

Not untrue, but the reality is that those countries now actually have all the premium fabric tech

Not untrue, but the reality is that those countries now actually have all the premium fabric tech I don’t dispute that the quality remains high, and the utility is basically the same for the consumer, but I’d like to see their margins before and after. It’s plausible that they had to offshore production to maintain both profits and the price point, but whenever companies do shit like that it just seems like they’re saying “hahaha fuck yourself”.

its also easier to scale in low-regulation countries than it is in the west.

It’d be cool to see a company choose not to scale up operations.

JJJJhound is doing a lot of cool collaborations. Snow Peak and Montbel for Japanese shit. Norse Projects has a lot of cool shit. Stone Island is getting way more recognition. Fjallraven seems to be getting pretty popular. I really like 1017 ALYX 9SM but the prices are too steep for me.
Salomon probably the most hype outdoor brand right now.

I was super apprehensive however it can be found on sale pretty often. Everything I own is legit well made.

It’s not hype, but I’m a big fan of Fjallraven. I’ve found myself gravitating toward any hooligan brand for outerwear. At least any affordable brand — no way I’d shell out for Stone Island or CP Company. Napapriji (sp?) seems pretty dope, but I always feel like I’d be suffocating in an anorak.

A few years back I was on a ski lift with some Gen X guy in full Arcteryx gear who answered his phone, which had Bulls on Parade as the ringtone, and started literally screaming about converting some debt into preferred stock. It was so surreal. Anyway that was the moment Arcteryx became associated with heavy music.

When I first moved to Portland my apt was a few blocks from the Arc’Teryx store so that’s how I found out about them. I needed pants that would hold up to the Portland rain and got some on sale. Had to go back the next paycheck to get a jacket because I was so impressed by how well they performed in the rain.
I have shells and light jackets from 2013 that are still in great condition, just a little faded. The best thing about Arc’Teryx jackets is the zippers are actually waterproof and stay waterproof.
